Delhi – Meerut RRTS Line’s Meerut South Station Opens for Operations

National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) today extended passenger operations from Modinagar North to Meerut South on the 82.15 km Delhi – Meerut RapidX (RRTS) project.

This exciting development comes 5 months after the 17.1 km Duhai – Modinagar North section was inaugurated by India’s Prime Minister in March 2024. NCRTC had in fact extended trials runs to Meerut South Station in December 2023, but couldn’t start operations due to pending architectural finishing and station entry/exit structure works.

Meerut South Station comprises of 3 platforms for servicing semi high-speed long distance trains and local 3-coach Meerut Metro trains. This station has the largest parking lot among all stations with a capacity to host 300 cars and 900 two-wheelers.

With the addition of this 8 km new section, approximately 42 km of the entire Delhi – Meerut RRTS line is now operational covering 9 stations between Sahibabad in Ghaziabad to Meerut South.

NCRTC’s operations partner DB will run Alstom ‘Namo Bharat’ semi high-speed trains from 6 am to 10 pm with the first train in both directions departing at 6 am and the last train leaving at 10 pm.

The Duhai – Meerut South section was built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as part of 33 km Package 3. NCRTC had awarded them both Lot-1 and Lot-2’s construction contracts in March 2020 with a 910 day (2.5 year) deadline.

With this development, NamoBharat trains have now reached the doorstep of Meerut city. This station and all stations north of it till Modipuram will be serviced by local 3-coach Meerut Metro trains.

The section I’m most looking forward to opening is the Sahibabad – Sarai Kale Khan section within Delhi which comprises of Package 4 (under construction by STEC; tunnels completed in August 2023) and Package 6 (under construction by Afcons).

    Hey TMRG
    A couple of questions.
    1. When are you expecting Sahibabad – Sarai Kale Khan section to be operational? Hopefully next year?
    2. Do you have any updates on Delhi-Alwar RRTS? While checking on the web I see that geo-technical investigations are on. Any idea when they can start the tendering process for civil construction?

      Not tmrg but my estimates,

1- Delhi section will have test runs by the end of thie year, but seems like it will be the last to be operational and align with the actual deadline.

2-Civil work activities on Delhi-Alwar will start after this line in the late next year.

        1. Next year sounds about right. It might open prior to Meerut section though since Modipuram Depot’s construction was off to a late start.
        2. Start of tendering depends on when they achieve financial closure and receive a “go-ahead” approval to start bidding activities.

Platform level seems good, but the concourse could be a bit more in terms of aesthetics and lightening, especially the only plain plastered walls and ceilings

Biggest nuisance is connecting jewar international Airport with ghaziabad rrts. Instead of giving a direct link to IGI Airport this new nuisance project is being planned by over smart babus.

Any update on the Jangpura extension of RRTS. I heard there was some issue there as viaduct was passing through a residential colony.
