Delhi Metro’s Rithala – Kundli Line Approved by Central Government

India’s Central Government’s Cabinet on Friday officially approved the 26.463 km Rithala – Narela – Nathupur (Kundli) metro line of the Delhi Metro Phase 4 project at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,230 crore.

This new extension of the 34.69 km Red Line (Rithala – Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda), built in phases 1 & 3, will connect north-west Delhi and Haryana. Its route by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will run entirely elevated and comprise of 21 new metro stations.

Out of 26.46 km, 23.73 km will lie in Delhi (22.75 km elevated & 0.98 km at-grade) with 19 stations, while 2.73 km will lie in Haryana with 2 stations.

The line’s route has gone through several revisions since its inception and one of my oldest posts on it from 2016 can be viewed here. Between 2019-2021 the line was envisioned to be built as a stand-alone light rail transit (LRT) under the Delhi Metrolite project which never took off.

A new train maintenance depot is planned to be built between Sanoth and Bhorgarh village. 21 new metro stations will be built at Rithala, Rohini Sector 25, Rohini Sector 26, Rohini Sector 31, Rohini Sector 32, Rohini Sector 36, Barwala, Rohini Sector 35, Rohini Sector 34, Bawana Industrial Area – 1 Sector 3,4, Bawana Industrial Area – 1 Sector 1,2, Bawana JJ Colony, Sanoth, New Sanoth, Depot Station, Bhorgarh village, Anaj Mandi Narela, Narela DDA Sports Complex, Narela, Narela Sector 5, Kundli and Nathupur.

Map shared by DMRC in 2023

Detailed designs of this line have long been ready and subsequently tweaked by Egis Rail SA – Egis India Consulting Engineers JV who were appointed as the Detailed Design Consultants (DDC) in 2019 under Package DCDD-03. Prior to that CEG Test House and Research Centre had conducted geotechnical investigations.

A full list of all Delhi Metro Phase 4 packages, their contractors and status can be viewed here.

When built, this extension will effectively connect Haryana – Delhi – Uttar Pradesh making the Red Line the first to connect 3 different administrative regions. It will also be Delhi Metro’s fourth line into Haryana. The other 3 operational ones connect Gurgaon (Yellow Line), Ballabhgarh (Violet Line), and Bahadurgarh (Green Line) – view my Phase 4 map here.

With this development, a total of 112.42 km of metro routes across 6 lines have been approved under Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 of which 65.1 km of Priority Corridors (Pink Line, Magenta Line & Golden Line) are under construction.

Tender notices are still pending for the civil construction of the 12.377 km Inderlok – Indraprastha extension of the Green Line and 8.385 km Lajpat Nagar – Saket G Block line. Both of those were approved by the Central Government’s cabinet in March 2024 and I imagine DMRC is currently in talks with different lenders to fund construction work.

It remains to be seen if Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will fund all 3 remaining lines’ development for underground tunneling and systems procurement like it signed and committed to do so in 2021 for Phase 4’s 65.1 km Priority Corridors.

Why even new line in 2024 are so built so cheaply, ₹6,230 crore for a 26 km line with 21 stations? No wonder there is compromise in design and functionality.

Because this is totally elevated, no hurdle which will cost lower budget. Alignment is available without hurdle

You named rithala among new stations. Will Rithala station be rebuilt for phase 4 at a different point near the older one? Or would it be an extension from the older station?
Also, What according to you would be the operational year for this one? With 3 under construction severely delayed upto 2028(golden line) and the 2 approved ones which have No progress as of now, I can’t see this going operational before 2031-32 any way…
    What do u say?

The old station will serve the purpose. No new rithala station. The first station will be rohini sector 25. It will take atleast 6 years 2030 may be

In that scenario, what would be the rolling stock configuration?? DMRC is running 8 Coach Trains on Red line corridor as of now. I don’t think they would order 8 coach trains for the extension due to uncertainty over ridership.
So, there could be 2 scenarios , either the new 3/4/6 coach trains would run from Rithala to Nathupur only( would terminate at Rithala and reverse back towards Nathupur) OR DMRC might order 8 coach trains for that as well serving whole Nathupur- Shaheed sthal corridor…

This will. Be an extension of red line. The press conference stated 6 car configuration for this route and an interchange station ahead of rithala. The route alignment on dmrc website also says same. Probably, like maujpur and upcoming peeragarhi station, Rithala might work as an interchange and line will run in 2 loops.

Although they have done this in past as well for pink line and blue line..but eventually turned to full length to length train runs.

  3. Kannishk18 says:

1.there will be an interchange station at rohini sector 25 which means existing red line metro will not go further.
    2. there will be 4 coaches train on broad gauge (i think alstom rolling stock will be used)
    3. if delhi govt pays money on time then it will be completed till 2028.
    4. work should start just after elections . i am suprised to see that inderlok-indraprastha and lajpat nagar-saket metro work didnt started yet they got approval this year in march. (do you guys know who is responsible for this)
    5. according to me this route will get completed by 2030 if aap again won elections because delhi govt is not releasing funds on time.

That say only.. Rithala Narela.. pending since phase 1..
Although Badli- narela was straight route
Also, DDA also released funds for a spur from Bawana to Holambi kalan for this extension only.
Rohini sec 25..will serve as an interchange just like Maujpur and upcoming peeragarhi for magenta line.
Correction, press conference yesterday mentioned 6 coach rolling stock.

Which line with intersect at Rohini Sec 25 ??

        • Mohit says:

Either rithala or rohini sec 25 will serve as an interchange just like how maujpur acts as an interchange and upcoming peeragarhi will be . Trains from botanical will terminate at peeragarhi and rk ashram – peeragarhi will serve as separate line..called as break of operations.Things should be clear in due time.

          • Yash says:

Rithala would be the interchange station most probably. Otherwise, in case of Rohini Sec 25, they would require to make station and platform that could accommodate 8 coach train, which is very unlikely.

Work on Rithala – Kundli line should be started immediately because thousands of people are badly affected due to negligence of Delhi Government. This line should have been started long ago. In Bawana itself 18k+ factories are functioning and the same in Narela ( little less than Bawana). There is absolutely no connectivity from Rohini to these areas except few feeder private buses and every one knows about them how they take care of the passengers.

There are NO plans for Phase 5 as of now. DMRC is not even thinking about it because they are struggling hard to complete Phase 4 first. With this speed they would take another 8-10 years to complete it. So, don’t expect any progress over phase 5 in near future.
Also, I don’t think after phase 4 is done, Delhi needs Phase 5. Most of the locations are already being covered/would be covered after phase 4. But possibilities are always there.
Personally, I always wanted Vaishali-Mohan Nagar strech to be okayed. It would directly connect Red and Blue line the most busiest lines.

No buddy construction has started of Delhi Metro Phase IV in the year 2019 and it’s been exact five year time for phase IV construction of Delhi Metro. And the lines are in construction presently.

I think u didn’t understand my point. Kindly read it again. I m not saying they haven’t started work for phase 4. What I am saying is they are delaying it so much that it would take another 8-10 years to complete it.
Of course everyone know that work started back in Dec, 2019.

They can approve a section from Rithala to Nathupur Haryana. But have severely ignored the Greater Noida West (UP).

Forget about metro, there’s not even public transport catering to needs of population.

That is fine. But only news news and news everywhere all around. What about the Construction? Construction is not starting at all, zero progress of construction of the corridor. Really India needs to improve and pull up its socks on this kind of behaviour . Really, Really Shocking, Shame on India! India knows only how to fool public. Really I do not expect it from such a wonderful motherland, beautiful country India ! DMRC has to work on this casual attitude! This is not at all expected by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
The “Krishna Park Extension” Metro Station on the extension of the “Magenta Line” of the Delhi Metro has still not open to the public yet. It has been five months,It’s December now! and still no announcements or news have been made even after Station was 100% complete in July this year and safety inspection was carried out on July 30th this year. Something needs to be done! Delhi Metro Rail Corporation pull up your socks!
