DMRC MD Approves Survey for Modified 95.86 km Phase 4

In December 2015, I shared an official map & plan of what Delhi Metro’s 103.93 km Phase 4 project would look like. That plan has now been modified to a slightly smaller 95.86 km project with multiple changes across key metro lines.

Last week during the multiple TBM breakthroughs at the Mayapuri Shaft & Lal Qila station, I got my hands on a document in which DMRC’s Managing Director has approved survey & preliminary ‘pre-construction’ works on all lines that are currently on the table for Phase 4. These lines have been assigned to different Chief Project Managers (CPMs) with orders to immeadiately start survey & other assorted preliminary works on their allocated corridor. Here’s the document:

Allotment of preliminary work schedule for Phase 4 lines

Allotment of preliminary work schedule for Phase 4 lines

Here’s a list of all the corridors that are on the table:

New Lines – There have been major alignment changes here
Note: I have assigned random line colors to each corridor to highlight them on the map below.

Dwarka – Kanjhawala – Prem Piao: 18.6 km with 18 stations
This is a new line that has been added to the mix. Interestingly both Kanjhawala and Prem Piao do not fall on the route of the new Urban Extension Road (UER) # 2 that is being built to urbanize the north-western part of rural Delhi.

Tughlakabad – Saket – IGI Terminal 1: 19.68 km with 15 stations
This line was earlier envisaged to connect with the Aerocity station, but will now go on to meet the Terminal 1 station with connections at Tughlakabad with the Violet line, Saket with the Yellow line, possibly the Aerocity station of the Airport Express line and finally the Magenta line’s Terminal 1 station.

Majlis Park  – R.K. Ashram: 10.72 km with 10 stations
This line is a truncated version of the Janakpuri W – R.K. Ashram extension of the Magenta line that was planned to come up in Phase 4. With the Janakpuri W to Majlis Park component gone, this corridor will now function as a new stand-alone line with connections to the Blue line at R.K. Ashram, Green line at Nabi Karim, Yellow/Pink line at Azadpur and the Pink line at Majlis Park.

Extension of existing lines – There have been no changes to the alignment

Pink line – Majlis Park – Maujpur: 12.56 km with 6 stations
One of the following 7 stations has been dropped: Burari Crossing, Jagatpur Village, Surghat, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar and Maujpur

Green line
– Inderlok – Indraprastha: 12.57 km with 10 stations
Stations on this corridor include: Inderlok, Dayabasti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, Nabi Karim, New Delhi, LNJP Hospital, Delhi Gate, IG Stadium and Indraprastha

Red line
– Rithala – Narela: 21.73 km with 16 stations
Stations on this corridor include: Rohini Sector 26, Rohini Sector 31, Rohini Sector 32, Rohini Sector 36, Rohini Sector 37, Barwala, Put Khurd, Bawana Industrial Area – 1, Bawana Industrial Area – 2, Bawana, Bawana JJ Colony, Sanpath, New Sanath Colony, Anaj Mandi and Narela

Based on the above, here’s a preview of how all 6 corridors might look like:

Phase 3’s construction is expected to end in 2018 after/during which Phase 4’s tendering process will begin. By then, multiple changes in scope, alignment and design are expected to take place, so there’s nothing to be alarmed about. One of those changes in scope would include the addition of a new corridor connecting Dwarka with Gurgaon for which the DMRC was recently tasked to prepare the Detailed Project Project. Whether this will be an extension of the Airport Express line or the Blue line is yet to be seen. There’s still a long, long way to go before Phase 4’s plans are finalized.

Blue line to Najafgarh & Red line to Ghaziabad will open in 2018, and that will bring Phase 3’s construction to an end. Please see the Delhi section for updates.

Hi, opening in 2017 would be great but not possible as per my estimate. The Blue line is not being extended from Vaishali in Phase 3. It’s being extended from Noida City Centre to Noida Sector 62 (NH-24) – please see this map

Isn’t the Inderlok-Indraprastha a new line given the mess of the existing green line alignment and the fact that all new stations are to be underground (a new underground station just north of the existing red line Inderlok?) Where could they put a depot for this new line, or how could it connect to the existing green line?

    • Chronicsurfer says:

Currently Inderlok Red Line is a T-junction with the Green Line, so if the underground station starts from here, commuters will be forced to change lines here – making the Indraprastha line an independent line.

Ashoka Park connects to Inderlok and Kirti Nagar… I do not think there is provision currently to extend this line directly on to Rohtak Road and take it underground to Dayabasti and onwards to Indraprastha which will give direct connectivity to Nangloi.

The Green Line exchange may be messy, it would be interesting to see how they make it!

Final list of station names are yet to be announced. What is known is that all stations between Saket and IGI will be will underground. A small 2.36 km section of the Tughlakabad-Saket will be underground, so expect 1-2 stations to be underground.

There need to to more lines,
Viz. 1) Khajuri Khas to ISBT (Kashmere Gate)- via. pusta road, Shastri Park, IT Park, ISBT. This may also be done by extending the Faridabad-Kashmere line upto Khajuri Khas.
    2) Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor should be extended to Ankur vihar (UP) via Karawal Nagar
    3) At sangam Vihar, Delhi-62, there should be some line to relief the commuters.

Do you know anything about the line from “Kirti Nagar to Dwarka Sector 10” which was earlier proposed for Delhi Metro Phase 4?

    • TMRG says:

Hi, it’s not being pursued anymore. Would have been an excellent alternative than the longer Blue line. Maybe it’ll come back for Phase 5.

      • Chronicsurfer says:

If only DMRC can realign the Green line extension from Kiri Nagar to Ashoka Park to end at Inderlok, then in future if this line is extended to Dwarka it will be a better alignment and a possible solution to the Green Line mess.

Rithala to narela line. Do metro think villagers will get some benefit of metro cause route is from outside. What about patients who will travel from metro and they wil not get proper connectavity for hospital. Cause of maharshi valmiki hospital station not proposed in 4th phase.

Living Uttam Nagar, we suggest to link direct Moti Nagar station to Inder Lok at any cost. At present it takes 3 times boarding and a lot of time.

Absolutely agree. That area through Mayapur Industrial / Lajwanti / Janakpuri is heavily populated. Surprised DMRC did not pick it up in Phase 4.

Hi Rajnish, I don’t have any contacts within the DMRC. My suggestion would be to wait until Phase 4’s civil contracts are awarded which I will write about whenever they are awarded. After that, you can contact the contractor and set something up.
