MMRDA Approves Mumbai Metro’s Line-5 and Line-6
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) headed by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved (see press release) the implementation of 2 new elevated metro lines in the city. This includes the 24 km Line-5 between Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan and the 14.5 km Line-6 between Lokhandwala – Jogeshwari – Vikhroli – Kanjurmarg. The Detailed Project Report for both projects will now be placed before the state cabinet for the state government’s approval.
• Line 5 (shown in Pink below) has been estimated to cost Rs. 8,416 crore and will consist of 17 stations at Kalyan APMC, Kalyan Station, Sahajanand Chowk, Durgadi Fort, Kon Gaon, Gove Gaon MIDC, Rajnouli Village, Temghar, Gopal Nagar, Bhiwandi, Dhamankar Naka, Anjur Phata, Purna, Kalher, Kasheli, Balkumbh Naka and Kapurbawdi.
• Line-6 (shown in Brown below) has been estimated to cost Rs. 6672 crore and will consist of 13 stations at Lokhandwala Complex, Adarsh Nagar, Momin Nagar, JVLR, Shyam Nagar, Maha Kali Caves, SEEPZ Village, Saki Vihar Road, Ram Baug, Powai Lake, IIT Powai, Kanjurmarg (W), Vikhroli-EEH. This line was originally planned to connect Jogeshwari with Kanjurmarg (11 km) on the JVLR, but has now been extended further west to the Lokhandwala Complex and further east to touch the Eastern Express Highway in Vikhroli (E).

The MMRDA hasn’t disclosed how they’ll fund these lines or provided a list of interested banks/organizations willing to provide a development loan, but optimistically expects civil work to start in 2018 once the state government’s approval comes in. Like lines 2 & 7, I believe they’ll first invite tenders and start civil work utilizing city & state funds, and then arrange for additional funds via a loan and utilize it towards the systems component such as rolling stock, signalling and telecommunications.

Map in the overview seems a bit wrong. Metro 7 won’t go all the way to Bandra East.
Hi, the line is proposed to go to Bandra (E) in the future. Check out the legend on the very last page of this document.
There’s another proposal to route it to the CSI Airport’s T2, but I haven’t seen any official documentation on that.
Oh, that’s news to me. Thanks for sharing!
Could you please provide compressive update on Mumbai Metro line 3.
Hi, geotechnical investigation has started at multiple places – see this new post.
I heard abt that metro 6 will extend till mira-bhayander….is this true?
Hi, I haven’t seen any official announcements or comments on that.
How many underground stations?
0. Both lines will be elevated.
are both lines elevated?
Yup – it’s mentioned in the first line.
Please give updates about line-3 and corridor -7 works
Hi, geotechnical investigation on Line-3 has started at multiple places – see this new post.
As for Line-7, contractors have setup their temporary site offices underneath the Magathane / Aarey flyovers. The stretch from Jogeshwari to Malad as well as the National Park flyover – Magathane flyover have been barricaded. I’m expect piling works to commence within a month.
How much time Will it take to complete the construction of the new houses in trilokpuri rehabilitation after which viaduct will be built on.
why not till Bhayandar
this is so unfair
More Lines on cards….refer links below.
Though the ultimate crux of the matter will be when and how transparently these lines are timely delivered and commissioned for public use without any major cost overruns.!!
Are there any plans to extend the Kalyan – Kapurbawdi metro till Thane station in future?
No plans for now.
When Going to Start a Plan 5 on Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro?
Hi, I don’t expect construction to start before 2020. Before that, they need funds and the MH govt’s funds are all tied up elsewhere with 3 lines under construction (line 2A,3,7) and 2 in the pipeline (2B, 4).
Well dear as much as I am concern about Metro-5, the govt will soon issue tenders, later on which the bidding process will start with the core discussion which will be going to be a part of this Metro-5 project. Well , govt stated that by 2018 govt will finish all the process of tender, bidding & later on civic work will start either from 2018 or from 2019 begining onwards, if really govt n authorities will not be gng to create any hurdles
is metro 5 underground?
No, Metro-5 will be completely elevated project
I think your Mumbai Metro-5 map is wrong. In recent approval, govt of Maharashtra changed previously approved route. Some of the stations previously approved stations are discarded. From Temghar, Metro will go directly to Anjurphata via different route and there might be one new intermediate station of Oswal Wadi. It was reported in local dailies but national media picked up previous route map.
Government’s press release describing the approved route can be seen here –
