Casting Work Begins for 1st Pier of Mumbai Metro’s Line-2

With the rebar framework ready for multiple piers, workers today began casting work on New Link Road in Borivali to construct the elevated piers of Mumbai Metro’s 18.6 km Line-2A between D.N. Nagar & Dahisar East.
This pier is a part of package AC-01 which was awarded to J Kumar Infraprojects by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in July 2016 and includes 8 elevated stations at Anand Nagar, Rushi Sankul, I C Colony, Eksar, Don Bosco, Shimpoli, Mahavir Nagar and Kamraj Nagar. Piling work to build its foundation began in November 2016 and casting work for the viaduct’s U-girders is underway at Bandra Reclamation.
When it’s ready to be shown, I’ll post an update here and on my Twitter handle.

With 66+ km going U/C late last year, there’s now TONS of little updates coming out from there.
If I am not wrong, I already see one pier casted and deshuttered in hindsight in the first photo posted here.

Quick update. I apologize – I’ve been duped. The images provided to me are actually from Line-7 as Sahil identified below. Another (more reliable) source says the shuttering equipment has just been moved on-site a few hours ago. When new images are available, I’ll update this post.
There is remarkable lull on work beyond Oshiwara signal on link toad towards Andheri. Have not seen any prep work as well. This section involves 2 major turns of 90 degree . is anything holding up the work. Other sites of J Kumar are progressing fast .

Its been a long time coming. Line 2 planning was such a mess, I am glad to see it finally coming together.
First of all, you are doing a really great job.
Second, what do you think of feeder connectivity in Mumbai? Monorail or some light rail can easily penetrate areas where metro is an overkill while cycling may not be possible. I was thinking over new links for East West connectivity.
Eg: A monorail/light rail from Marve to Lokhandwala (Kandivali)
via Mith chowki, Malad statin, WEH, cross WEH and to Lokhandwala. The slums in Malad and Kandivali across WEH can be redeveloped as a HUGE cluster. Will save further Aarey encroachment and also recover some encroached space.
Similarly a monorail/light rail from Gorai in Borivali W to Borivali E and extend to Kandivali E to join previous mentioned line.

Our cities’ transport planners & operators (esp Delhi) have so far done a poor “chalta hai” job with feeder connectivity, so I’d definitely love to see a holistic plan come up to drive ridership and reduce commute times. Mumbai’s BEST bus services to Line-1 are great, but a monorail/light-rail along some routes (like on the ones your proposed) would really help to “complete” the system.
When all the much hyped metro lines become operational around 2020, the financial capital of India would have about 500 km of lines including 250 odd km of the IRs EMU services. And almost all of it is on the surface or elevated. All elevated metro lines are forced to mirror roads. I believe the better way to a sustainable intra-city system is by a criss-crossing underground network. Sure unit costs are higher but lines would be shorter since straight lines can be followed. And a maze of underground lines would dramatically reduce land commutes leaving overground space for commercial and recreational purposes.
Beijing and Shanghai already have much over 500 km of mostly tubes and there are at least a dozen more Chinese cities with robust metro Railway systems. China has left behind the legendary London, NY and Moscow systems which were till now held up as the benchmarks.

3. What about airport line (i.e Andheri airport to Navi Mumbai airport)??
Mumbai Metro has no “phases”. All existing, under construction, approved and proposed lines can be viewed here.
Hey… Great work on the blog. Very informative and helps us get updated about work that we see everyday. Especially since the station will come up right in front of your own House. Although I always thought that Line 2A was supposed to be underground and not elevated? What caused the change?
Hi Shahid, thanks for your message. The line has an interesting history and has seen several design changes over the last 10 years. The current state government, in their effort to speed up things, decided to execute it as an elevated line with DMRC’s support all the way to Mankhurd. I know people in Juhu/Bandra as well as the Airports Authority of India have an an issue with an elevated line passing through their neighborhood, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens to Line2A (DN Nagar-Mankhurd) in the next couple of months.

Now there are 5 piers ready in bangur Nagar section. Also work has started in Oshiwara area. But what is alignment? earlier it was shown from Mega Mall area but now work has started near cremetoriam are bypassing mega mall – Oshiwara Police station stretch. Will have 2 90 degree turnings and that area is crowded like hell due to (many illegal) manufacturing units/garages.
