2nd Launching Gantry Commissioned for B’lore’s R4B at Yelachenahalli

Workers from NCC this weekend commissioned their 2nd launching gantry at Yelachenahalli to launch precast segments for building the Bangalore Metro Green Line’s 6.29 km southern extension to Anjanapura Township.

This development comes just 2 months after they commissioned their first launching gantry south of the Krishna Leela Park Station’s site after winning the contract to build package Reach 4B of the Bangalore Metro’s 72 km Phase 2 project between Yelachenahalli and Anjanapura Township in January 2016. As per a Twitter follower, as of February 14, the 1st LG crane has completed building (launching & post-tensioning segments) for 8 spans.

The Reach 4B section includes 5 new stations at Anjanapura Cross Road, Krishna Leela Park, Vajrahalli, Thalgattapura & Anjanapura Township on Kanakapura Road, and is expected to become operational in late 2019. Here’s a map displaying the direction of both launching gantry cranes in orange:

Each segment weighs 40 tons and usually 10 segments are required to build one span between two adjacent piers. For this section, NCC will launch 2018 segments which they’re currently casting at their yard in the nearby Thataguni Village. As per BMRCL’s Feb 2017 newsletter, 345 of them had been cast by the end of January 2017.

Here’s my go-to video to demonstrate how the Launching Gantry works its magic with precast segments to build modern segmental viaducts and bridges:

TMRG, what happened to the integrating and extending the existing rolling stock to 6 coaches? Thank you.

Unsurprisingly BEML was the only bidder, and as per one source was awarded the contract last week. I’m waiting for confirmation from other sources & final value details before writing about it. If true, then expect the first 6-coach train to roll out by 2018-end.

There is a news in today’s news paper that pahse-1 majestic to sampige road trail runs are starting from 25th Feb 2017. Any news from your side on the same?

Hi, I provided an assessment of the underground section in the Feb update. In any case, this is going to be a media event targeted to show they’re on track for an April opening (no pun intended, ha) which is far from happening. The signalling system is nowhere close to being installed and tracks for the northbound line are still being laid.

    Hi TMRG,
Can you throw some light on how segments get interlinked with one another?

      Hi,
      1) In Phase 2? No. In Phase 3? I haven’t seen any reports indicating any plans to do so.
      2) Good possibility of it being extended in the future as that’s the only place where the Green Line can be routed to. It could be included in Phase 4 plans? Maybe Phase 5 plans? We’ll have to wait and watch.

Phase 4/5. Is that really going to happen!!! Even phase 3 seems like would conclude nothing before 2050. Phase 5 by 2100 may be 😛

New lines and extensions of existing lines will be constructed as long as there’s a demand to connect existing/uncharted neighborhoods or in order to decongest existing lines.

Timing wise, a 2100 opening for Phase 5 is not too far fetched!

Hello TMRG. The road expansion is happening after the nice road junction on kanakapura main road. Is this expansion in the plan to extend the metro till art of living? Plz comment.

The Green Line in Phase 2 is supposed to end before (north) of the NICE road. The road widening activity you saw must be related to something else.

The road widening is part if NHAI plan to make NH-209 a 4 lane road from Bangalore city till TN border. To start with Bangalore – Kanakapura stretch would be made 4 lane afaik.

Good News. Despite the fact that the there’s no news regarding the underground line of Phase-II, other sections seem to be making progress (tenders wise etc). Even if all the other parts get finished as per schedule (with just 1-2 revisions), then I would expect it to have huge +ve impact on Bangalore traffic.

    Hi TMRG,

Recently there was article in news paper saying Phase 2 extension (Knakapura Rd & Mysore ) will be completed by 2018 end, two year ahead of schedule. Is this true.

I see most of pillers are ready from Nayandahalli to RR arch

BMRCL is just being BMRCL. With the quantum of civil work involved (and all that follows), 2018-end is just not possible. Pillars are easy to setup and come up fairly quickly everywhere, but the stations take a relatively longer time to be constructed and you’ll notice that as construction progresses.

Hi, IGI – Kalkaji Mandir trial runs are yet to start. They might announce trial runs in Q2 (April – June) and run a train through one of the tunnels for the media, but I expect proper testing through both tunnels to start only in Q3 (July-Sept).

Pratibha-FEMC, the contractor for the Kalkaji – Hauz Khas section, has deserted most of the station sites due to cash flow issues and the DMRC is currently trying to re-tender the balance work at these stations. Due to this blip, there’s going to be a further delay and although DMRC’s website says they’ll be ready to open in September, I expect them to open only by Dec-end or in Q1 2018. Let’s see.

        Thanks for info .

But DMRC has taken standard upto lowest level under supervision of Mr. Mangu Singh.
Every stretch is late ,even upto 1.5 years in 3rd phase without any solid reason except trilok puri on pink line.
Moreover Snags are occurring repeatedly now a days.
This way public & commuters are losing faith in DMRC now a days.

Is trilokpuri issue resolved. Dmrc will demolish old houses and new houses for block15 residents. Last year you mentioned in your post that dmrc takes over land earmarked for trilokpuri’s residents. Is the work going on.

I believe Mumbai metro uses much longer pre-cast segments (ref Line-1) hence there may not be this kind of launching . Going by your updates the pics from J Kumar casting yard shows similar length longer pre-cast segments.

Yea, Mumbai’s lines are being built using U-girders. Here the BMRCL has got its contractors to use box segments.

what is the status of Gottigere to Nagasandra Metro, by when it will be started, our bureaucrats have told it will be completed by 2020. it is not even started will they finish by 2020??

    • TMRG says:

Construction start depends on when the BMRCL invites bids from civil construction companies. If they were to invite bids on March 1, then construction work is expected to begin only between early-mid 2018 with TBMs starting mining/tunneling works by the end of the 2018.
