[Pics] Delhi Metro’s Kashmere Gate Station – March 2017

Here’s a picture-post showcasing the status of the Kashmere Gate Station on the Delhi Metro’s upcoming 5.17 km ITO – Kashmere Gate extension of the Violet Line which is popularly known as the Heritage Line. When ready, this station will allow users to easily switch to/from the operational Red & Yellow lines, but currently it remains the biggest bottleneck of the project and precisely what prevents the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation from applying for the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS)’ safety approval for starting commercial operations.

Construction for it is being carried out by Metrostroy-Era JV under package CC-07 of the 160 km Phase 3 project, and images from January 2017 can be found here: [Pics] Delhi Metro’s Jama Masjid & Kashmere Gate Stations – Jan 2017

The new station’s platforms will be connected to the existing station building via a series of escalators for which civil work is still ongoing.

For reference: Red Circle – Entry/Exit Shaft ; Yellow Circle – New Addition to Existing Station

Looking out through the shaft, the new addition to the existing station building is visible in the background

Entry/Exit Shaft

As per an on-site engineer, the first of six escalators leading out of the shaft is going to be installed today (March 11, 2017).

The DMRC was originally targeting to open this 5.17 km section with 4 new stations in December 2015, but has since extended the deadline multiple times while comically blaming demonetization and a 7-day construction ban along the way. The latest deadline offered through their website is March 2017, but as you can see, that won’t be achievable either.

As mentioned previously in my January monthly update post, I’m expecting this line to only open up in Q2 (April – June), but going by the progress made over the past couple months, there’s a good chance of it opening in Q3 (July – September). Stay tuned to find out what happens!

        Hi TMRG!
I wanted to know about how does DMRC lay tracks. Do they fix it in concrete?? I am confused after seeing that image in the tweet..

        Reply
        • TMRG says:

Hi, yes the tracks are anchored into the concrete using hinges & fasteners.

For underground sections, the contractor first makes a concrete bed (see images here) and while it sets or “solidifies”, they embed small anchors into it (see an image of the anchors here). After that, the tracks are laid and set into place using fasteners.

2 TBMs are still sitting on either side of the Gurdwara Shaft, between Majlis Park and Azadpur, blocking one of the tunnels. I’ll share an update whenever there’s something on the trials.

Why are these last two TBMs taking so much time to get excavated? They have been sitting there for months now.

Flooding issues from ground water seeping into the shaft. I’ve been told “paani band hee nahi ho raha”.

How Will passengers change from yellow to violet line.

    • TMRG says:

No underground connection, so users will have to climb up to the concourse level > walk east > take the stairs down to the Violet Line’s platforms, essentially making a big U.

DMRC has applied for the CMRS’s inspection, but no inspection dates have been provided or accepted by the CMRS. Still a couple months left for the old-new station connection at Kashmere Gate to be ready.

    Mr TMRG ,
Do you have any idea,as to the total time taken by DMRC for construction of ITO – Kashmere Gate
    section ?

    Reply
    • TMRG says:

Hi, ITO-Kashmere Gate was built by 2 contractors:
      1) Package CC-05: L&T – SUCG JV – contract awarded on: 23.01.2012
      2) Package CC-07: Metrostroy-Era JV – contract awarded on: 06.03.2012

You can do the math from here 🙂

The line faced many challenges. After work started, the line & Jama Masjid stations had to be realigned/relocated due to archaeological sites strewn around the alignment and the discovery of an old wall which is believed to be an old Masjid razed by the British after the 1857 war. One of the TBMs also broke down while tunneling, so another TBM had to be launched from the other end. See the Delhi section – I’ve covered this topic.
