Prior to its official launch on this Sunday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation today took the local news media on a tour of 3 of 4 new stations on its new 5.17 km ITO – Kashmere Gate section of the Violet Line, so here’s a picture-laden post to showcase everything the new line has to visually offer at the Jama Masjid, Lal Quila and Kashmere Gate underground stations.
All stations on this stretch through Old Delhi have been decorated with artwork to showcase the surrounding precinct’s landmarks and history. Some of it looks pretty and some very juvenile. However, what caught my eye was the introduction of what the DMRC calls “dream gates”. As part of a pilot project, these sleek new Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates installed at Jama Masjid and Delhi Gate stations will allow users to enter and exit the network using QR codes, paid for via Paytm, on their phones.

After this section opens up, the Violet Line, connecting Kashmere Gate with Escorts Mujesar in Faridabad, will become 43.4 km long and the Delhi Metro’s network will expand to 218 km. Stay tuned for a post on its inauguration!
