[Pics] Delhi Metro’s Heritage Line Ready for Sunday Launch
Prior to its official launch on this Sunday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation today took the local news media on a tour of 3 of 4 new stations on its new 5.17 km ITO – Kashmere Gate section of the Violet Line, so here’s a picture-laden post to showcase everything the new line has to visually offer at the Jama Masjid, Lal Quila and Kashmere Gate underground stations.
All stations on this stretch through Old Delhi have been decorated with artwork to showcase the surrounding precinct’s landmarks and history. Some of it looks pretty and some very juvenile. However, what caught my eye was the introduction of what the DMRC calls “dream gates”. As part of a pilot project, these sleek new Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates installed at Jama Masjid and Delhi Gate stations will allow users to enter and exit the network using QR codes, paid for via Paytm, on their phones.

Update – A quick, chaotic demo for the media can be viewed here.

After this section opens up, the Violet Line, connecting Kashmere Gate with Escorts Mujesar in Faridabad, will become 43.4 km long and the Delhi Metro’s network will expand to 218 km. Stay tuned for a post on its inauguration!

Entry gates look so dull, a typical “dukan” look. Entry gates of Chennai Metro ( as shown in pictures on this websites) in previous updates are far better in looks.
Robin you better go to Chennai, why are you here wasting time in delhi. Cheap mentality
A thunderous LOL….
robin your shitty chennai metro was built by DMRC so let go of your pretentious bs and focus on the topic
The dream gates look cool. Are they any different from existing ones ?
Yea, you can buy tickets via Paytm and scan a QR code to enter and exit. See DMRC’s pre-launch demo video here
The interior appears to be very well done and very nicely sets the right tone for the tourists. I hope they do a good job of maintaining what appears to be a sparkling interior. Great job by DMRC and the interior designers. Thanks for the post and great shots TMR keep up the great job !
Congratulations, DMRC and citizens of Dehi!
Dehi => Delhi.
What’s the platform arrangement for Kashmere Gate – Island? The floor sign lists only one platform (understandable because it’s a terminal), but is exit/boarding on the same side or is the reversal after the station?
Same side. KG has an island platform with only one platform/side functioning at this time.
On a different note, DMRC’s press release has info on its tapering design:
“The new station had a major engineering challenge. In the initial alignment, the new station was infringing on the existing station. Since the existing station could not be disturbed, the new station had to be curved at the Platform Level. The radius of the curve is 1, 000 mts. due to this, the downline is curved, while the upline is straight. Because of the same reason (infringement with existing station), the platform of the new station is also tapered. The width of the platform at the south end (Lal Qila side) is 14 mts and it narrows down to the North end to 8.5 mts.”
Update – turns out that both platforms are being used. Guards make sure the train is empty, and then the train goes north, changes tracks and comes back down to the other platform.
