T-206 – 5th TBM for Mumbai Metro’s Line-3 Arrives at Mumbai Port
So before TBM T-61 made a touch down in Mumbai on Sunday evening, the city’s port in the morning in fact received parts of another tunnel boring machine, this time T-206 – a STEC machine which was previously deployed in Singapore and passed factory acceptance testing (FAT) for Mumbai Metro’s 33.5 km Line-3 in August. With that, I’ve renamed T-61’s post to #6 for factual consistency.
This refurbished Ø6.65m Earth Pressure Balance TBM is part of a 3 TBM order (2 refurbished and 1 new) which will be deployed by Larsen & Toubro and Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company (L&T – STEC JV) to build twin tunnels on the line’s 4.157 km package UGC-07, between Marol Naka – MIDC – SEEPZ – Aarey Colony Ramp, which was awarded by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. in July 2016.
As per the tunneling plan, T-206 will exclusively be deployed to excavate and build three tunnels, all on the up-line –
Launch Site | Destination | Length |
Pali Ground Shaft | CSIA T2 | 1296m |
Pali Ground Shaft | MIDC | 680m |
MIDC | SEEPZ | 1003m |
The circular Pali Ground Shaft is located just north of the Marol Naka Station –

With T-206 and T-61 arriving on Sunday, now 6 out of 17 TBMs are in the city. Of those, TBM S-1073 was commissioned earlier this month while two TBMs are planned to be commissioned later this month –
• TBM T-58 at CST Station towards Kalbadevi Station on package UGC-02
• TBM S-1074 at Nayanagar Shaft towards Sitladevi Station on Package UGC-04

Have any indian cos yet developed the skills to operate tbms independently of foreign partners ?
Yea, I’m actually in touch with many local TBM operators and crew-men who take their acquired skills from firm to firm and project to project. Most of the times, the tunneling manager would be an expat (independent contractor) hired to keep things in check.
I’ve noticed a growing trend of Indian firms bidding alone without any foreign partners. See this post on Bangalore’s Phase 2 where I’ve listed all systems –

Admin…. until now no update on how much distance covered by TBM S-1073?? Give some info about that.
Will find out and reply back to you.
Last checked, they had completed 4 temporary rings by Nov 14.
Just heard back. 9 temporary and 1 permanent rings have been built.
1 ring = 1.4m
