L&T Begins Casting 1st Pier for Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train

Larsen & Toubro on Wednesday started pouring concrete to cast the first pier of the 508.17 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project which will connect both cities through 12 stations in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

This milestone in Gujarat’s Valsad District was recorded roughly 3 months after workers started pouring concrete for the first pier’s open foundation (pile cap). Shuttering panels (seen in blue below) to facilitate casting work arrived on-site last week.

This pier (P-13) at chainage KM 205+500 is located on the line’s 237.1 km Package C4 which is among the only 2 of 8 civil packages awarded so far for the main-line’s construction. It represents 46.66% of the main-line, making it the longest amongst all, and runs elevated from Zaroli Village on the Maharashtra – Gujarat border to Vadodara through 4 stations at Vapi, Bilimora, Surat and Bharuch.

C4 also includes construction of the Surat Depot, 14 river crossings, 42 road crossings, 6 railway crossings and one 350 meter tunnel through a hill.

As a reminder – a bulk of the line (468 / 508 km) will be elevated, with contractors like L&T planning to use the full span launching method for its construction.

Few weekends ago, I fine-tuned the line’s alignment within Gujarat here to match its exact alignment. If you switch to the satellite view, you can see site clearance for vast stretches of land between Ahmedabad and Vadodara. In fact, south of Vadodara at Bodka village – 3 mega projects are visible within 2 kms of each other. West to east: Delhi – Mumbai Expressway (DME), Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train (MAHSR) and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC).

    The Surat HSR station is going to be that far out of the city? Dear God!

    Also, the Sabarmati Station is plotted slightly off the correct location

      Yea, Surat missed the bus errr…bullet train. Hope the existing highway to Surat is upgraded or “strengthened” for smooth access.

      Sabarmati’s Terminal Station (consisting of retail/hotel space) is under construction, but the actual station’s platforms will come up around the spot I’ve marked.

      Current estimate is 2028, but that’s on the optimistic side. All of Maharashtra’s civil packages are stuck in the bidding stage due to various reasons, as you might know. If things don’t move on by year-end, I’ll have to revise it to 2029.

    They’re planning two disconnected HSR stations in Delhi – one near Bijwasan and another in Sarai Kale Khan. It’ll be terrible for those changing trains (e. G., those traveling from Amritsar to Ahmedabad)

      Yeah, not ideal. Construction within the core city will be expensive, so I personally believe there will be a “Phase 2” sort of extension with all lines eventually meeting at NDLS.

    – C4 & C7 by L&T constitute 325 Km length.
    – 23-casting yards; each casting yard is spread in an area of 16-93 acres as per requirement.
    – approx. 300 Full Span Box Girder Casting and Launching in a month, which equals to approx. 12 Km of superstructure casting & erection in a month

    => 325/12 = 27months (2.25 years)

    ..it will take min. 27 months to launch the full-span box girders, also add the duration to erect piers so as to commence girder launching…One can conclude that it will easily take 3.5years to finish the viaduct civil works for C4 & C6..

    ..then installation of rails, OHE, signals and trials…easily one more year..

    one can expect Gujarat-HSR section getting operation by 2025 end (earliest)…or it could spill over to 2026. I don’t see much of scope to squeeze in the construction schedule..
