Alstom Begins OHE Work inside Mumbai & Pune Metros’ Tunnels

Alstom Transport India has in the past fortnight began installing anchor bolts to support the 25 kV overhead electrification (OHE) system of Mumbai Metro’s 33.5 km Line-3 (Aqua Line) and Pune Metro’s 16.589 km Line-1 (Purple Line).

Alstom was awarded Mumbai Metro Line-3’s traction contract (Package 11A) by MMRC in February 2018 with a contract value of Rs. 272.43 crore. The exact location for the 1st anchor bolt remains unknown, but I imagine it’s somewhere on the 4.157 km UGC-07’s tunnels between Sariput Ramp and CSIA Terminal 2 Station – the first package where tunneling was completed.

In Pune, MahaMetro awarded Alstom with the 31.254 km Phase 1’s traction contract in January 2019 with a combined value of Rs. 93.40 crore and EUR 4 million.

Work to install Pune’s 25 kV Flexible Overhead Catenary System (FOCS) got underway right away and that enabled MahaMetro to launch trial runs in January 2020 on a 2.4 km elevated section of Line-1 between PCMC to Sant Tukaram Nagar. Since then trial runs have been extended southward to Phugewadi.

Alstom’s team has now started installing the 25 kV Rigid Overhead Catenary System (ROCS) inside the completed portions of Line-1’s 5.019 km twin tunnels between Range Hills Ramp and Budhwar Peth.

Here’s what Pradeep Takale – MD of Systems & Infrastructure at Alstom India had to say:

With immense pride, today I am sharing the photos of the work our teams started in the tunnels of Pune and Mumbai for Rigid Catenary work since last few days with all COVID and EHS protocols and following Alstom’s Zero Deviation policy in a letter and spirit. These are just some of the photos of our frontline warriors who continue to work at site and try to deliver the infratstructure projects critically required for our country.

95% of Mumbai Metro Line-3’s tunneling has been completed (a TBM breakthrough was recorded yesterday at CSMT) and installation of various systems is well underway, but there’s still no headway on where the line’s depot (car shed) will ultimately be built to house its Alstom train-sets.

Any idea on the status of the case for Kanjurmarg depot in the Bombay High Court?
I think it has been more than two months since we heard anything about it in the media, which was the argument put forth by MMRDA in favour of Kanjurmarg and their willingness to buy the land from stakeholders for appropriate price.

Hearing was planned at 7th April, but postpone indefinitely due to 2nd Wave of COVID-19. Now God knows, when court will announce desicion

Hopefully some decision should be made either ways very soon, since the 2nd wave is receding. It’s high time for some place to be finalised and work to be started uninterrupted.
