6 Bidders for Chennai Metro Phase 2’s Track Work Contract

6 firms have submitted bids to supply and install standard gauge tracks for Chennai Metro’s Line-3 and Line-5 (Package BC-3,5/TRK-02) after Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) opened technical bids on Friday.

Both these new lines of Chennai Metro’s 118.9 km Phase 2 project will run in a north-south orientation to connect Madhavaram – SIPCOT (45.813 km Line-3) and Madhavaram – Sholinganallur (47 km Line-5) with a mix of elevated & underground stations.

CMRL invited tenders for this systems contract, financed by JICA, in October 2021 with a 850 day deadline + 730 day (DLP) and an unknown estimate.

Lead Bidders (some may be in a JV with other partners)

  • IRCON International Ltd.
  • ITD Cementation India Ltd.
  • Larsen and Toubro Ltd. (L&T)
  • Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL)
  • Texmaco Rail and Engineering Ltd.
  • Vijay Nirman Company Pvt. Ltd. VNC)

Scope: Supply, installation, testing and commissioning of track works of standard gauge including all associated works in (a) elevated section between CMBT (excluding) and ELCOT (including) in corridor 5 – upto circular connection to corridor-3 and (b) elevated section between Sholinganallur (excluding) to SICPOT (including) in Corridor 3 and pocket tracks & stabling lines of Chennai Metro rail Project Phase-2

The bids have been sent for technical evaluation which can take a couple months to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor.

Things on the systems tendering front are moving along nicely. Back in January, IRCON was awarded a similar track-work contract for Line-4. And then earlier this month, CMRL received 2 bids for lines 3 & 5’s head-hardened rail contract from Mitsui and Ohmi Industries.

According to tender drawings red line terminates at okkiyam thoraipakkam station and does not connect sholinganalllur, if so, then red line should be called or considered as madhavaram to okkiyam thoraipakkam and not madhavaram to sholinganalllur.
