L&T Wins Chennai Metro Phase 2’s Track Work Contract

July 29 2022 Update: Larsen & Toubro has been awarded a contract by CMRL valued at Rs. 339,63,37,733.00

April 11 2022 Original Post: Larsen & Toubro today emerged as the lowest bidder to supply and install standard gauge tracks for Chennai Metro’s Line-3 and Line-5 (Package BC-3,5/TRK-02) after Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) opened financial bids.

Both these new lines of Chennai Metro’s 118.9 km Phase 2 project will run in a north-south orientation to connect Madhavaram – SIPCOT (45.813 km Line-3) and Madhavaram – Sholinganallur (47 km Line-5) with a mix of elevated & underground stations.

CMRL invited tenders for this systems contract, financed by JICA, in October 2021 with a 850 day deadline + 730 day (DLP) and an unknown estimate. Technical bids were opened in February to reveal 6 bidders.

Like other Phase 2 packages, CMRL’s estimate for this is unknown, so I can’t provide an assessment on how L&T’s bid is placed and what the next steps look like.

Things on the systems tendering front are moving along nicely. Back in January, IRCON was awarded a similar track-work contract for Line-4. In February, CMRL received 2 bids for lines 3 & 5’s head-hardened rail contract from Mitsui and Ohmi Industries.

This is the first major systems contract for both lines where financial bids have been opened. A list of all Chennai Metro Phase 2 civil & system packages and their status can be viewed here.
