L&T Awarded Chennai Metro Line-3 OMR Section’s Contract

Larsen & Toubro last week was awarded a Rs. 963 crore contract to construct Chennai Metro Line-3’s first 10 km elevated package (CPO8) between Nehru Nagar – Sholinganallur by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).

The scope of this Chennai Metro Phase 2 section includes an approximately 10 km viaduct starting from a ramp south of Taramani Link Road Station with 10 stations on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR).

After a major redesign in 2021, CMRL re-invited bids for its construction financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in December 2021 with a 36 month deadline and an unknown estimate. Technical bids were opened in February 2022 to reveal 6 bidders and L&T emerged as the lowest bidder in April.

Tender No.: CMRL/CON/PHASE-II/CORRIDOR3/C3-CP08-EV-01/RT-01/2021

Brief Scope: Construction of elevated viaduct (approximate length-10 km) including elevated ramp and ten (10) elevated metro stations at Nehru Nagar, Kandanchavadi Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Mettukuppam, PTC Colony, Okkiyampet, Karapakkam, Okkiyam Thoraipakkam and Shalinganagallur

Back in mid-May, CMRL received 7 bids for Line-3’s 10.13 km second and final elevated section (ECV-01) connecting Sholinganallur Lake – SIPCOT 2. Going by CP8’s experience, financial bids are likely to be opened in July.

This is L&T’s 2nd contract for Line-3 and overall 5th contract in Phase 2. A list of all Phase 2 civil & system packages and their status can be viewed here.

Since the contract is awarded, any idea when the time will start ticking for the 36 month deadline?
