Agra Metro Priority Corridor’s Final U-Girder Launched by Sam India

Sam India Builtwell on Monday launched final of 196 U-girders for Agra Metro Phase 1 project’s 6 km Priority Corridor connecting Jama Masjid Station – Taj East Gate Station.

This major construction milestone on 14.25 km Line-1 was recorded at the depot-line that juts off south of Taj Mahal Station towards PAC Depot where Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) received their 1st Alstom 3-coach Metropolis train-set last week.

The 27.90m long curved U-girder weighs approximately 160 MT.

Sam India Builtwell is responsible for the 6 km Priority Corridor’s 3 km elevated section (Package AGCC-01) between Taj Mahal Ramp – Taj East Gate on Fatehabad Road.

UPMRC had awarded Sam India with its Rs. 272.95 crore contract in October 2020 which includes building the line’s elevated viaduct with 3 stations at Fatehabad Road, Basai and Taj East Gate.

Sam India started pier work in February 2021, launched the first pier cap in August 2021, and launched the first 28m U-girder in November 2021.

Afcons Infrastructure – SAM India Consortium in February started tunneling works on the priority corridor’s 3 km underground section between Jama Masjid – Taj Mahal. So given the quantum of work (civil & system) pending, I reckon we might see commercial operations first start on the elevated section. Stay tuned…

I really don’t understand why do our metro companies award contracts in the sequence they do?

Everyone knows tunneling and building underground stations takes time and so those contracts should be the first priority. Elevated contracts can be done later so that both can complete at almost the same time.

This is the thing we are seeing in delhi, kolkata metro as well.

Then you are in this situation where you have to start operations on a small 3 km, 3 station strech. I mean what is the point of running trains on this strech. It wil serve no actual purpose and is only good for joyride, nothing else.

Project sequencing unfortunately comes down to financing.

In Agra’s case, AGCC-01 (elevated section) is being built by state funds. EIB’s approval for AGCC-02 (underground section) took some time to arrive.

Delhi’s underground packages (DC-05, DC-07 to 09) were similarly delayed ’cause of JICA’s pending approval.
