RAPIDX: New Name for Delhi NCR’s RRTS System

Delhi’s upcoming semi-high speed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) with lines to Meerut, Alwar & Panipat has been branded as RAPIDX, per National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).

This new rail system till now didn’t have an official name. RRTS simply referred to the type of rail system (i.e. a regional train service), just like how MRTS (mass rapid transit system) refers to local metro or monorail services.

The system’s new name RAPIDX is reflected on NCRTC’s website:

It was also announced via a banner on their social media accounts:

Between 2017-2022, the system’s lines were referred to as “Smart Lines” in various government’s brochures. After publishing about that name in 2020, NCRTC’s public relations agency reached out to me clarifying that wasn’t the official name and they were “yet to officially decide the name for our RRTS lines”.

In the project’s 349 km Phase 1, which is about as large as the Delhi Metro’s current network, three RAPIDX corridors with 62 stations have been prioritized for development.

RAPIDX trains will run with a maximum speed of 160 km/hr and average speed of 100 km/hr to connect Sarai Kale Khan with other neighborhoods within Delhi, Delhi’s suburbs, and towns in the National Capital Region (NCR).

In the next phase(s), five additional RAPIDX lines will be developed. All of these have been mapped out on the NCR RRTS page.

  • Delhi – Faridabad – Ballabhgarh – Palwal RAPIDX Line (60 km)
  • Ghaziabad – Khurja RAPIDX Line (83 km)
  • Delhi – Bahadurgarh – Rohtak RAPIDX Line (70 km)
  • Ghaziabad – Hapur RAPIDX Line (57 km)
  • Delhi – Shahadra – Baghpat – Baraut RAPIDX Line (56 km)

To clarify, the system hasn’t been renamed. It’s now been named. RAPIDX to me sounds alright and captures what the system aims to be, rapid or swift, but it could have been a little sharper like Seoul’s upcoming GTX (Great Train eXpress) or Paris’ RER (Réseau Express Régional). Perhaps NCRX?

Yay or nay? Drop a comment if you have any other ideas.

Also, this makes me wonder if they’ll assign a name for Meerut Metro which will utilize roughly 20 kms of RAPIDX’s infrastructure for local MRTS services between Partapur – Modipuram. Stay tuned to find out!

I won’t say yay because i think it could have been something more slick. You know the way modi government gives everything a cool acronym.
UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik)
    Or the pragati meetings where
PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance And Timely Implementation).

So this mightve been a missed opportunity.

NCRX reminds me of NCIX which was a computer store based out of Canada. It was because they went bankrupt.
Anyways, all this means launch is near and ultimately that is what matters.

They can keep it simple like Delhi Rapid Rail (DRR) or Delhi Express Rail (DER)

I wonder how it would sound to my illiterate aunt, who lives near Delhi.

      I idnt really think that’s a problem.
Sleeper, general, station, train, metro etc are all English words but even illetrate people know what is being referred to while using there words in reference to trains.
So after a few days she will get used to rapidx as well.

I don’t see Englishness of the name as the problem – just that the word is a bit complex. Metro, on the other hand, is much simpler to pronounce.

Absurd statement. English has nothing to do with literacy. Literacy is the ability to read or write in ANY language (apart from being able to do basic math calculations). I don’t understand how English or literacy has anything to do with the name being given here.

In my personal opinion, they should’ve kept it smaller two-3 syllable at the maximum. Maybe DEX?
RapidX sounds somewhat alien to an average resident in Delhi

Didn’t you ever hear if Rapidex English speaking course…… Its a 3 syllable word… RA-PI-EX(D silent) and quite a cool word and easy to pronounce. Better than RRTS tongue twister rapid train as rapid would eventually sound…. Errrrr r**ped.

RAPIDX sounds highly inappropriate. Most people will not be able to even pronounce it correctly. I would suggest VEGA in place of this odd sounding name RAPIDX. VEGA
( वेग: ) means speed in Sanskrit . It is small , easy to remember and pronounce besides it sounds very modern and has an international appeal

Initially, I also felt saying this name unusual but after saying it few times its tuning just fine. Imagine someone saying “Mai RapidX se jaa raha hu”( I am going by RapidX). Sounds just fine to me. Anyways people will get used to it.

How about RRR(Regional Rapid Rail) or iR3/BR3(India’s/Bharat Regional Rapid Rail) ?

I Would like to propose a name for Meerut Metro as METX. Nomenclature is suggested following NCRX – Two intial letter followed by last letter of the name of the place and X for express. So in future of the metro lines from NCRX terminating in Panipat and Alwar can be named as PATX and ALRX as sister stations NCRX. I would like to see other options also.
