Titagarh Awarded Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2’s 30 Coach Contract RS3

Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. in a regulatory filing on Wednesday announced it was awarded an approximately Rs. 350 crore rolling stock contract for supplying 30 coaches (Package RS3) for Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project.

Ahmedabad’s 28.254 km long Phase 2 will see the city’s north-south Red Line getting extended northward by 22.838 km from Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir via 20 new stations and a 5.416 km spur from GNLU to GIFT City via 2 new stations.

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) requires Titagarh to deliver the first (prototype) 3-coach train within 70 weeks (1.34 years) from the Letter of Award (LOA) and complete the 10 train-set order within 94 weeks (1.8 years) of LOA.

GMRC had invited tenders for this crucial system contract in April 2022 funded by France’s Agence Française de Développement (AFD). Technical bids were opened in September.

I don’t have a list of bidders and their bid values for this tender, and I suspect Titagarh was the only bidder. If someone has more information, then leave a comment below or shoot me a message via the Contact page. I’d like to add it in here for record keeping.

This is Titagarh’s 3rd major order in India after Pune Metro’s 102 coach rolling stock contract signed in August 2019 and Surat Metro’s 72 coach contract awarded in June 2023. In addition, Titagarh is also manufacturing 204 coaches through a tie-up with CRRC in 2022 for Bangalore Metro’s rolling stock contract 4RS-DM.

Back in November 2017, Hyundai Rotem was awarded Ahmedabad metro’s Phase 1’s 177.1 billion won (Rs. 1032.94 crore) contract to supply 96 coaches (32 trains of 3 cars). All train-sets were manufactured at their plant in Changwon, South Korea.

This time around, all coaches will be manufactured domestically at Titagarh’s plant in Uttarpara near Kolkata. With this being a small order, I imagine the design will be extremely close to Surat Metro’s train design. Whether it is or not, we’ll find out in early 2025. Stay tuned!

Designs are proprietary. Other lines where different stock are run:

Delhi’s Yellow / Blue – Rotem and Bombardier
Nagpur’s Orange (temporarily) – Hyundai Rotem from Hyderabad and CRRC
Pune’s Aqua/Purple (temporarily) – CRRC from Nagpur and Titagarh
      Bengaluru’s Purple/Green (soon) – BEML and CRRC-Titagarh
      Kolkata – mix of ICF/ICF-Medha/CRRC
