Delhi – Meerut RapidX: Afcons Casts Package 6’s Final Segment

Prior to the inauguration of the 17 km Priority Corridor (Sahibabad – Duhai), Afcons Infrastructure celebrated casting their final segment for Package 6 of the 82.15 km Delhi – Meerut RapidX (RRTS) project’s viaduct.

9.3 km long Package 6 within Delhi connects Sarai Kale Khan RapidX Station – New Ashok Nagar Ramp with a 1.35 km bridge over the Yamuna River, just north of DND Flyway.

Afcons’ team first performed a small puja and then poured concrete for the final 10.5m wide segment at their Gazipur Casting Yard (view on Google Maps). By back of the hand calculations, I reckon they’ve cast around 2200 box segments for this section’s viaduct.

National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) had awarded Afcons with Package 6’s Rs. 1061 crore construction contract in October 2020 with a 30 month deadline.

Some snaps of the puja ceremony by Shreeom Shivhare:

When this segment is launched in the coming months, Package 6 will become the 4th of the line’s 6 elevated packages to complete launching activities after KEC-CCECC JV’s Package 1, APCO-CRFG’s Package 2 (both are operational) and L&T’s Package 3 Lot-1 (Duhai – Modinagar North).

Back in September, Afcons launched 13 segments for the RapidX line’s viaduct over the Delhi Metro Blue Line’s viaduct at New Ashok Nagar – see details & pics.

I see Package 6 and STEC’s underground Package 4 (Sahibabad Ramp – Anand Vihar – Ashok Nagar Ramp) opening up in one go in mid-2025. Prior to that, we should see 33 km Package 3 opening up to connect Duhai – Shatabdi Nagar.

I still feel that 17 km is too short for opening a section of semi high speed train. Do you have any idea about the initial ridership details ? Although, at this time, most of it could be joy rides.

shanghai maglev is 30km in length only. its still useful to get to city center in fastest way possible. this delhi meerut short segment can be helpful for people to get to railway station in shortest time from parts of delhi. 17 kms in metro takes too long and in cab costs more and long.
