Chennai Metro Phase 2: Voltas Awarded Line-5’s E&M Contract EM-04

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) on Thursday awarded Voltas’ subsidiary Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Ltd. with a Rs. 137.86 crore contract for Chennai Metro Line-5‘s electrical & mechanical (E&M), fire protection, ventilation and air-conditioning work.

This mostly-elevated 44.6 km long line of Chennai Metro’s 116.1 km Phase 2 project will run in a north-south orientation to connect Madhavaram Milk Colony – Sholinganallur.

This contract (Package C5-EM-04)’s scope includes system works at 22 elevated stations and viaduct between Koyambedu Market and Elcot Park stations. The Koyambedu Market – Puzhuthivakkam section is under construction by Larsen & Toubro (Package C5-ECV-02), while Puzhuthivakkam – Elcot Park is under construction by HCC – KEC JV (Package C5-ECV-03).

CMRL had invited tenders for this systems contract, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), in February 2023 with an unknown estimate and 810 day (2.2 year) completion deadline.

Technical bids were opened in June to reveal 7 bidders, while financial bids were opened in September to reveal Universal MEP as the lowest bidder.

This is Voltas’ second win in the Phase 2 project. Back in November 2022, they were awarded Line-4’s E&M contract for 18 elevated stations and viaduct between Poonamallee Bypass – Power House Ramp.

CMRL’s social media team usually posts about contract signing ceremonies on their Twitter / X account, so we should see a blurb about this contract in the coming weeks.

Bidding is underway for a similar contract (Package C5-EM-03) covering 16 stations (6 underground & 10 elevated) of Line-5’s northern section between Madhavaram Milk Colony and Koyambedu’s Grain Market. That package’s technical bids are currently scheduled to open on January 24, 2024.

Depending on where your located, the closest metro stations would be on Line-5 at Assisi Nagar, Manjampakkam, Velmurugan etc.
