KPIL – Gulermak Begins Work on Kanpur Metro Line 2’s Underground Section

Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL) – Gulermak JV on Monday officially launched construction work on underground Package KNPCC-11 of Kanpur Metro’s 8.38 km Line-2 which will connect Agriculture University – Barra-8 via 8 stations.

This 4.08 km long underground section will connect Agriculture Depot – Double Pullia Ramp via twin tunnels and 3 underground stations at Rawatpur, Kakadeo and Double Pullia.

After building a guide-wall in the preceding week, KPIL – Gulermak’s team began grabbing and trenching work to construct the diaphragm wall (D-wall) for Rawatpur Metro Station. This new underground station will form an interchange with the operational Line-1‘s Rawatpur Metro Station.

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had awarded KPIL – Gulermak with Package KNPCC-11’s Rs. 762.50 crore contract in December 2023 with a 30 month deadline.

Brief Scope: Design and Construction of TBM Tunnel, Cut and Cover Tunnel, ramp after Double Pullia, ramps in Agriculture Depot for main line and depot connections and three underground metro stations (viz. Rawatpur, Kakadeo and Double Pullia) including Architectural finishes etc. on Corridor-2 of Kanpur MRTS Project at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India india

KNPCC-11 is the third underground package of the 32.38 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project after Line-1’s KNPCC-05 (Chunniganj – Nayaganj) and KNPCC-06 (Nayaganj – Transport Nagar).

I expect tunneling works to begin in Q2 2025. UPMRC requires KPIL – Gulermak JV to use at least 2 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for constructing 6 tunnels.

Gulermak in March wrapped up tunneling on Line-1’s Package KNPCC-05 (Permat Ramp – Nayaganj) using Terratec machines TBM Tatya (S92) and TBM Nana (S93), so we might see them getting redeployed. We should have clarity by Q4 2024 on whether that happens or not.

This is the 1st of 2 civil packages for Line-2 main-line’s construction work. The other package (KNPCC-12 – awarded to Ceigall in March 2024) consists of 2 disjointed elevated sections with 5 stations at Agriculture University Station, Vijay Nagar Chauraha Station, Shastri Chowk Station, Barra-7 Station & Barra-8. We should see basic ground work for it start by the end of April and actual construction work in Q3 (June – August) 2024.
