SNC Casts Bangalore Metro ORR Line Package 2’s Final U-Girder
Shankaranarayana Constructions (SNC) on Monday cast their final of 519 U-girders for Package 2 of 56 km Bangalore Metro Blue Line’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) section.
The city’s new Blue Line by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) is being developed in Phase 2A (19 km ORR Line) and Phase 2B (37 km Airport Line) to connect Silkboard – KR Puram – Bengaluru International Airport through 30 stations.
SNC’s casting yard for the ORR Line’s 8.377 km Package 2 (Kodibeesanahalli – KR Puram) is located in Kacharakanahalli near Whitefield (view on google maps). It consists of two 146m long casting beds from where 5 U-girders each – ranging from 18m to 27.90m – were cast for the line’s viaduct and stations.
The very first U-girder was cast on February 11, 2022. 435 of these girders are dedicated for the viaduct, while 84 are dedicated for stations (12 per station).
SNC was awarded ORR Line Package 2’s Rs. 623.55 crore contract in May 2021 with a tight 27 month deadline.
Their scope includes constructing Kodibeesanahalli – KR Puram section’s 8.377 km viaduct, 7 elevated stations at Kodibeesanahalli, Marathahalli, ISRO, Doddanekundi, DRDO sports complex, Saraswathi Nagar (Mahadevpura) & KR Puram, a 1.097 km depot-line linking to the existing Baiyapanahalli Depot, and a 0.30 km pocket track.
SNC has so far launched 417 out of 519 U-girders. The first one was launched in June 2022 at Mahadevapura, the 200th was launched in May 2023 at Doddanekundi Split Flyover, the 300th was launched in November 2023 at Mahadevapura Flyover, while the 400th was launched recently in June north of Saraswathinagar Station.
While the scope of work and site complexities are vastly different, for simple comparison – Afcons Infrastructure has so far launched 293/652 U-girders for 9.859 km Package 1 of the ORR Line connecting Silkboard – Kodibeesanahalli. At this time, I see Phase 2A (ORR Line) opening up no sooner than Q2 2026 and the rest of the Blue Line (Phase 2B or Airport Line) no sooner than Q2 2027.

Cool will take a look
Would it be possible for the yellow line trains to work on the pink line of Bengaluru Metro. Both have similar specifications and technology. This may mean that a part of the pink line will open earlier. (This is just wishful thinking)
What is the estimated time for completion of launching all the U-Girders for Phase 2A ONLY?
