KPIL – Gulermak Casts Kanpur Metro Line-2’s 1st Tunnel Segment

Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL) – Gulermak JV today began pouring concrete to cast the first batch of tunnel ring segments for 8.38 km Kanpur Metro Line-2 which will connect Agriculture University and Barra-8.

KPIL – Gulermak JV is responsible for constructing Phase 1 & Line-2’s 4.08 km underground Package KNPCC-11 between Agriculture Depot – Double Pullia Ramp. This section with twin tunnels will consist of 3 underground stations at Rawatpur, Kakadeo and Double Pullia.

KPIL – Gulermak JV in 2025 will deploy two Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines, S-1408A and S-1409A, to bore and construct twin tunnels. From back of the hand calculations, I estimate they’ll churn out at least 3600 tunnel rings to build this section’s tunnels which will have an inner diameter of 5.8 meters.

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had awarded KNPCC-11’s Rs. 762.50 crore contract for underground tunneling & construction work to KPIL – Gulermak JV in December 2023 with a 30 month deadline.

KNPCC-11 is the third underground package of the 32.38 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project after Line-1’s KNPCC-05 (Chunniganj – Nayaganj) and KNPCC-06 (Nayaganj – Transport Nagar).

KPIL – Gulermak JV officially started construction work at Rawatpur Station in April 2024, and this weekend started casting its mid-slab. This 4-level underground station will form an interchange with the elevated Line-1’s Rawatpur Station.

During the construction phase, I hear TBMs S-1408A and S-1409A will first be launched from Rawatpur Station to Agriculture University, then be brought back to Rawatpur Station and get relaunched towards Kakadeo Station and onward to Double Pullia Station.

Could you please explain why the Rawatpur underground station is of 4-level?

I haven’t seen detailed designs, but it appears they’re going to use one level below the concourse level for housing operational systems. But that still only leads to a total of 3 levels.

Surat’s Labheshwar Chowk Station has 4 levels due to space constraints, I wonder if a similar layout will be used: https://themetrorailguy.com/2024/01/30/surat-metros-tbm-tapi-records-1st-breakthrough-at-labheshwar-chowk/

Comparing with Surat’s Labheshwar Chowk Station concept Rawatpur Station is totally different. Here concourse slab is in ground level. Only the difference is this. Kolkata howrah metro station also have more 5 slabs.

Thanks, what’s the purpose of each level here?

I don’t know the exact reason. But from what I’ve seen near the construction site, the underground line will pass under the elevated line. Also the proximity of both stations is quite close. So to prevent the tunnels from going through the piles for pillars…..they had to naturally increase the depth of tunnels and hence the 4 levelled station.
