KSM Awarded Kanpur Metro Agriculture University Depot’s Contract KNPCC-14

Continuing with the string of contracts awarded for Kanpur and Agra metros, K.S.M. Bashir Mohd. And Sons on Friday was awarded a Rs. 73.01 crore contract for the civil construction and systems work of Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project’s Agriculture University Depot & Workshop (Package KNPCC-14).

This train maintenance facility by Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) will be built on a 37.69 acre parcel within Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology.

It will house an undisclosed number of 3 coach Alstom MOVIA train-sets for Kanpur Metro’s 8.38 km Line-2 which will connect Agriculture University – Barra-8 via 8 stations (3 underground & 5 elevated).

Agricultural University Depot will be connected to the main-line via 4.3 km Package KNPCC-12’s 557.8m northern section (Ramp – Agriculture University) which was awarded to Ceigall India on Friday.

UPMRC had invited bids for the depot’s construction in November 2023 with a Rs. 113.20 crore estimate and 18 month construction deadline. Technical bids were opened in December 2023 to reveal 5 bidders.

During evaluation, bids submitted by Vishnu Saran and Company and Quality Buildcon were found non-compliant to the tender’s conditions and were disqualified. Financial bids of the 3 qualified firms were opened this Wednesday. The figures below show bid values inclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

UPMRC’s Brief Scope: Civil, PEB and E&M works for construction of depot cum workshop, including structural, architectural, plumbing, drainage, external development, road works, electrical, mechanical, VAC, fire fighting, fire detection etc. at Agricultural University Kanpur for Agricultural University to Barra-8 Corridor-2 of Kanpur Metro

KSM in the past has built Kanpur Metro Line-1’s Polytechnic Depot, and they’re currently building Indore Metro’s Gandhi Nagar Depot and Delhi – Meerut RRTS’ Modipuram Depot.

With this development, I expect KSM to begin basic ground in the middle of Q2 2024 (April – June) and full fledged construction work in Q3 2024 (July – September). Kanpur Metro’s Line-2 is an extremely short line, so I imagine UPMRC will stable only 8-10 train-sets at this depot.

Just like Agra Metro’s Line-1, UPMRC’s civil contractor team for 8.38 km Line-2 (Agriculture University – Barra-8) is now finalized:

  • KNPCC-11: KPIL – Gulermak JV (4.08 km underground section)
  • KNPCC-12: Ceigall India (4.30 km elevated section)
  • KNPCC-14: K.S.M. Bashir Mohd. And Sons (train depot)

It’s a good thing so many cities in UP are getting metros, as their population will increase so much over the next few decades that it’s good to build ahead of time (Hopefully more and more lines keep on getting built in the big UP cities) Now, there should also be a focus on transit oriented development, high FSIs near stations, good footpaths, and feeder buses as well.
