Kalpataru Wins Nagpur Metro Phase 2 Package C-11’s Contract

Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL) on Monday was declared as the lowest bidder to construct 17.647 km Package C11 of the 43.8 km Nagpur Metro Phase 2 project by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL or MahaMetro).

The scope of this package involves construction of 3 disjointed viaducts for Phase 2’s Reach 2B, Reach 3A and Reach 4A. The construction of 16 elevated metro stations en route will be carried out via dedicated station packages (see details at the bottom).

Nagpur Metro’s Reach 2B includes a 5.9 km viaduct for the northern extension of the Orange Line between Cantonment and Kanhan. Reach 3A includes a 6.4 km viaduct of the Aqua Line’s western extension from Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna, while Reach 4A includes a 5.3 km viaduct for the Aqua Line’s eastern extension from Prajapati Square to Transport Nagar.

The construction of these 3 sections’ viaducts were originally planned via 3 separate packages C-07, C-03 and C-04 respectively. The tendering process those packages were cancelled in February 2024 with their scope getting absorbed into one mega contract under Package C-11.

MahaMetro had invited bids for Package C-11’s construction in March 2024 with a Rs. 1010 crore estimate and 1080 day (3 year) construction deadline. Technical bids were opened in May to reveal 5 bidders. Among those, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL’s) bid was disqualified as it didn’t meet the tender’s conditions.

KPIL’s bid of Rs. 999 was Rs. 11 crore or 1.09% less than MMRCL’s estimate, so a contract should be awarded in the coming weeks without a long financial bid evaluation period.

When it comes to the stations enroute, RVNL was awarded Reach 2B’s 6 metro stations (Package C-08) in July, while MMRCL received 2 bids for Reach 3A & 4A’s 10 metro stations (Package C-06) in March and is still carrying out technical bid evaluation.
