Afcons Awarded Bhopal Metro Package BH-05’s Contract for Blue Line

Afcons Infrastructure on Saturday announced it was awarded a Rs. 1006.74 crore contract for Package BH-05 of Bhopal Metro Phase 1 project’s 12.915 km Blue Line (Line-2) connecting Bhadbhada Chauraha – Ratnagiri Tiraha via 14 elevated stations.

This mega package by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MPMRCL) includes the construction of the entire Blue Line’s viaduct, 13 stations, and a ramp leading to Subhash Nagar Depot which will be shared with 14.99 km Orange Line (Karond Circle – AIIMS) for maintaining and stabling 27 Alstom Movia train-sets.

The EPC contract comes with a 3 year construction deadline.

Bhopal Metro’s Blue Line was earlier designated as the Red Line. Its Bogda Pul Station (interchange with Orange Line) will be built by URC Construction as part of Package BH-03.

MPMRCL had invited bids for the Blue Line’s construction in June 2023 with an estimate of Rs. 1121.63 crore financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) through a €400 million loan.

Technical bids were opened in October 2023 to reveal 7 bidders, and financial bids were opened in October 2024 to reveal Afcons Infrastructure as the lowest bidder among the 4 technically qualified bidders – view bid values here.

MPMRCL’s Brief Scope: Part Design and Construction of elevated Viaduct, thirteen (13) elevated Metro Rail Stations viz. Bhadbhada Chauraha, Depot Chauraha, Jawahar Chowk, Roshanpura Chauraha, Kushabhau Thakre Hall, Parade Ground, Prabhat Chauraha, Govindpura, Govindpura Industrial Area, JK Road, Indrapuri, Piplani and Ratnagiri Tiraha (excluding an Elevated Passenger Interchange Metro Rail Station), between Chainages 50+000 and 62+915, and access to Depot between Chainages 00+155 and 01+100 for Blue Line for Bhopal Metro Rail Project

This is Afcons Infra’s second major metro related contract this year after 11.2 km Kochi Metro Pink Line’s Package KBC-3 which was awarded in June with construction works formally starting in July.

With this development, MPMRCL has awarded all major civil contracts outlined for Bhopal Metro’s Phase 1. I expect basic site preparation work to start after the holidays in January 2025 and full fledged construction work in Q2 2025.
