Kalpataru Wins Kochi Metro Phase 2’s Electrification Contract

Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL) this week was declared as the lowest bidder for the Third Rail Electrification contract of Kochi Metro Phase 2 project by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL).

Kochi Metro’s Phase 2 by KMRL will feature a 11.2 km new elevated line, named Pink Line, with 11 stations connecting JLN Stadium – Kakkanad – Infopark (Smart City).

Basic construction on Phase 2 started in July 2024 by Afcons Infrastructure barely two weeks after they were awarded a Rs. 1141.32 crore contract with a tight 600 day construction deadline.

KMRL had invited bids for its electrification contract in August 2025 with a 2 year commissioning deadline. Technical bids were opened in October to reveal 3 bidders, and their financial bids were opened this Tuesday.

KMRL’s estimate is unknown to me, so I can’t provide an assessment on how Kalpataru’s bid is placed and the chances of a LOA being issued. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

If and when awarded, they will be assisted SYSTRA MVA Consulting as the Detail Design Consultant and by Leap Infraasys Pvt. Ltd. (LIPL) as the Proof Consultant for its electrification system.

Most of the U-girder launching activity by Afcons I hear has taken place within Infopark which with its relatively wider roads allows for easier launching. Here’s a snap shared by a follower:
