Hyundai Rotem Wins Ahmedabad Metro’s 96 Coach Contract
South Korean rolling stock manufacturer Hyundai Rotem today announced that it has been awarded a 177.1 billion won (Rs. 1032.94 crore) contract to supply 32 three-car train-sets for Ahmedabad metro’s 39.259 km Phase 1 project. The trains will be manufactured at their Changwon plant and deliveries are expected to take place between April 2019 and July 2020.
The Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad (MEGA) had invited bids for the system’s rolling stock in January 2016 and received bids from four firms – Alstom, Bombardier, CRRC and Hyundai Rotem. The bidding process got indefinitely delayed after CRRC got disqualified in the technical bidding round and pursued the legal route. They successfully challenged it in the Gujarat High Court to allow for their re-entry, but lost in the financial bidding round.
As per Hyundai Rotem, Ahmedabad’s new 2.90 m wide trains will have a maximum speed of 80 kmph, have a carrying capacity for 782 passengers and be capable of running on the “driverless” unattended train operations (UTO) mode like the Delhi Metro’s new RS-10 rolling stock. Each coach will have convenient space for wheelchair users, four CCTV cameras for passenger safety, fire detectors, LED route guide indicators and a LCD passenger information display system.

The design is very similar to what they submitted for Delhi Metro’s Pink & Magenta lines in 2013 – see its transformation from concept to design to production here. A similar transformation might take place for Ahmedabad’s trains.
With this development, Hyundai Rotem has entered yet another Indian city after Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore (BEML), Jaipur (BEML) and Kolkata (BEML).

Good chance of that happening as witnessed in Delhi, especially if MEGA pushes them.

Definitely! Kind of embarrassing for the Gujarat government as well. Instead of being built in Savli (and energizing the local supply-chain ecosystem), these will be coming all the way from South Korea.
Isn’t there a “make in India” clause in these contracts?

This will be Hyundai Rotem and Nippon Signal’s second project working together after Delhi’s Magenta Line (Line-8).
If delivery starts April 2019 then how would MEGA will do trial runs as they claim?
Or is it that the Vastral Apperal Park route will remain unutilized for a year or so.
Not sure what MEGA & GJ govt’s latest claim is, but you can safely rely on the delivery schedule (at least the starting timeframe) mentioned by Hyundai Rotem. If the trains start arriving as planned, then there’s a slim chance of the 6 km Vastral Gaam – Apparel Park section opening up towards the end of 2019. They won’t require more than 5-6 trains to start operations.
In addition to above cities, Hyundai also won the contract for entire Hyderabad metro in 2012 itself. Hyundai Rotem will be supplying 57 trains at Rs 1,800 crore. Hyderabad train sets has similar specs to this Ahmedabad metro.
Average cost per train (with 3 cars):
Hyderabad: 1800/57 = Rs 31.57 crores (2012)
Ahmedabad: Rs 32.37 crores (2017)

Isn’t Bangalore metro coaches being manufactured by BEML? only the first few coaches were built by Hyundai Rotem right?
Yep – Bangalore’s first 150 coaches were supplied by the BRMM consortium – BEML (leader), Hyundai Rotem, Mitsubishi Electric Company and Mitsubishi Corporation. First 15 coaches were built in Changwon, rest in Bangalore. The new 150 intermediate coaches will all be supplied by BEML via their tie up with Hyundai Rotem.
Hopefully the platform length of Ahmedabad METRO rail is built to handle 6coach trains so three coach trains can be upgraded to six coaches in the future!
That’s exactly how they’ve designed the system 🙂 Platforms are 140m long which are easily capable of handling 6 x 22.01m long coaches.
I was kinda hoping Bombardier or Alstom would get it. Just to see a little more variety.
