Afcons Launches Kanpur Metro’s 1st Cross Arm Pier Cap & I-Girder
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) this week announced that launching works had started for cross-arm pier caps and I-girders near IIT Kanpur Station on the 8.728 km priority corridor of Kanpur Metro’s 23.785 km Line-1 between IIT Kanpur and Motijheel.
The 9 elevated stations of Phase 1’s priority corridor are being constructed by Afcons Infrastructure with a length of just 80 meters each to cater to 3-coach Bombardier trains. In the future, as ridership increases, these cross-arm pier caps (with extensions on either side) will allow the stations’ platforms to be extended to 140 meters to cater to 6 coach trains.
Per UPMRC, a total of 39 such cross-arm pier caps will be launched – 7 at Motijheel Station and 4 each at the other 8 stations.
The launch of 178 27m long I-girders at three places, instead of U-girders, for the line’s viaduct will allow track cross-overs to be installed to allow trains to switch lines. The 3 spots are at IIT-Kanpur, Motijheel and near Gurudev Chauraha for access to and from the Polytechnic Depot which is under construction by K.S.M. Bashir Mohd. and Sons.
The 9 stations on Kanpur’s Priority Corridor are located on NH34 (GT Road) at IIT Kanpur, Kalyanpur Railway Station, SPM Hospital, CSJM Kanpur University, Gurudev Chauraha, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur Railway Station, Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital and Moti Jheel.

Hi Mate,
These cross-arm pier caps look pre-fabricated. Are other pier caps (normal pier caps) also pre-fab? OR cast in-situ?
However, nice to know that the planners are now designing the infra keeping future demands in mind…would have been nice if such thinking was employed during Delhi Metro’s Phase-1&2..
Hi, regular pier caps have also been pre-fab’d. First one was launched in March. Snaps: https://themetrorailguy.com/2020/03/03/afcons-launches-1st-pier-cap-for-kanpur-metro-line-1/
It’s surprising that it took 20+ years (from Delhi’s inception) and the launch of 20 projects for any operator to even think of such an innovative future planning approach. Most likely Agra will also see similar 80m elevated stations with an option to expand.
Noted. Hope, going forth, all the metro organizations (& other infra organizations) will learn to use innovation in planning and design.
Progeny will laugh at the flawed planning adopted during DMRC’s phase1&2… some examples (of flaw):
– The stretch of Punjabi Bagh-Peeragahi-Mundka-Bahadurgarh is so congested ,even after constructing the metro-line, that this section would have easily qualified for two stack (double-decker) viaduct; Metroline on level-2, highway/expressway line on level-1, with local traffic on the ground level…but that was not to happen!
– DMRC has placed Mundka-IA Station right at the intersection of Rohtak Road with UER-II…now NHAI will have tough time aligning UER-II to decongest Delhi.
Difficult to digest that such basic flaws had happened whilst Mr. Sreedharan was at the helm of affairs…
Yes, Agra will also have this same configuration, at present Metro station with 80m length, which can later be expanded 60m more. As of now both Kanpur and Agra will have 3 Cars configuration with an option to adjust one more car in current 80m PF length.
This seems to be taken note after New Metro Policy in which they mentioned that at start of service ridership will always be low and hence future planning can be considered, reducing initial construction costs as well.
