ITD Launches Bangalore Metro Reach 1A’s Final Segment

3 days after the inauguration of Bangalore Metro’s Whitefield Line, ITD Cementation India launched their final precast segment to complete the “missing link” on Purple Line’s 15.257 km eastern extension from Baiyyappanahalli to Whitefield.

This major civil construction milestone for 8.039 km Reach 1A (Baiyyappanahalli – Sitharama Palya) of the 73.92 km Phase 2 project was recorded between piers BP26 – BP27 at Benniganahalli.

The exact site (view on Google Maps) is adjacent to the Bengaluru – Salem railway line where ITD had launched a 65m long open web girder (OWG) in February after a lengthy design approval related delay and several launch hiccups.

With the site cleared of the OWG launch’s staging equipment, ITD’s team on Tuesday began lifting their final 11 out of roughly 2200 segments which are each 8.8m wide and 2.1m tall.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had awarded Reach 1A’s Rs 689.51 crore civil construction to ITD – ITD Cem India JV in April 2017 with a tight 27 month deadline.

ITD Cem’s team began piling in June 2018 just north of Hope Farm Junction and started launching segments in March 2018.

Reach 1A includes 6 new stations at Benniganahalli (formerly Jyothipuram / Tin Factory), KR Pura, Singayyanapalya (formerly Mahadevapura), Gurudacharpalya, Hoodi (erst. Doddanekundi) and Sitharama Palya (formerly Visvesvaraya Industrial Area).

With this development, only minor civil works are pending. The span will now be stressed and lowered down, with parapet wall launching works to be performed. System works (track-work, signaling installation etc.) will follow.

The start of commercial operations between 2.2 km Baiyappanahalli and KR Pura is now just months away and I’m looking at a July – August launch date. That’ll link the new 13 km KR Pura – Whitefield section to the rest of the Bangalore Metro network making it 70.8 km strong.
