Mumbai Metro Line 2B Shunya Bridge’s Pile Cap Cast in BKC
J Kumar Infraprojects (JKIL) this week completed casting a massive pile cap for the 130 meter long Shunya cable-stayed bridge of Mumbai Metro’s 23.6 km Line-2B (Yellow Line) in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
This “iconic” bridge, as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) likes to call it, will support the viaduct of Mumbai Metro’s Yellow Line over Vakola Nala between Income Tax Office and ILFS stations (view site on Google maps).
This bridge on 12.824 km Package L2B-C101 will consist of a 80 meter long main span, 50 meter long anchor span, and one giant pylon (pier #478) where concrete was poured to build its pile cap.
Per MMRDA’s press release, the measurements for the pile foundation cap are 20.59 m x 11.979 m x 3 m. The concrete quantity of the pile cap is about 670 cubic metres, and it is with a reinforcement of about 197 metric tonnes including pedestal about 45 metric tonnes. 75 Dia VSL 835/1035 threaded stress bars (FFT Bars) were chosen for being embedded with the pile foundation cap. The FFT bars are 120 in number, and their utilization reinforces the pylon base to greater proportions.
MMRDA had awarded J Kumar Infraprojects with Line-2B’s Package L2B-C101 in May 2021 with a contract value of Rs. 1307.88 crore and 30 month deadline.
This is a retender of Package CA04R, previously awarded to Simplex Infrastructure, for the balance construction of the viaduct and 10 stations between ESIC Nagar and IL&FS (from chainage 34035.873m to 46860.384)
Back in 2020, MMRDA revealed the concept of this bridge ‘Shunya’ is derived from the historic invention of ‘zero’ in India in the 5th century. The bridge is designed as an ode to the immense significance of ‘zero’ in the technological world.
Line-2B will include another 2 “iconic” bridges to represent the sky (akash), and swords – see details and designs here.

Didn’t expected this. There was a news back during Covid days in 2021 that MMRDA dropped this cable stayed bridge plan then in 2022 someone gave update on Twitter about cable stayed bridge over Mithi River bridge is on. Btw is that BKC (Swords) cable stayed bridge on?
There is visible progress on this now with the commencement of structural steel elements of the “iconic” ZERO Bridge. Hope structural steel elements can expedite the progress of civil works compared to traditional RCC works.
Will Line -3 and line 2-B and Bullet Train Terminus be integrated for the convenience of mumbaikars Or not. Otherwise it’s stupid planning by all three agencies.
