PM Modi Inaugurates Agra, Kolkata, Kochi & Pune Metros’ and Delhi – Meerut RRTS’ New Sections
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today remotely inaugurated new sections of Agra Metro, Kochi Metro, Kolkata Metro, Pune Metro, and Delhi – Meerut RapidX (RRTS) projects from an event held at Esplanade Metro Station in Kolkata.
Totaling 40.23 km, these projects include 5 line extensions and 2 new lines (Agra Metro and Kolkata Metro Line-6). Next to each project I’ve linked my last post with more details.
- Agra Metro’s 5.2 km Taj East Gate – Mankameshwar (Jama Masjid) section also known as Priority Corridor (see details)
- Kochi Metro’s 1.163 km SN Junction – Tripunithura section also known as Phase 1B (see details)
- Kolkata Metro Line-2 (Green Line)’s 3.9 km Howrah Maidan – Esplanade section (see details)
- Kolkata Metro Line-3 (Purple Line)’s 1.25 km Taratala – Majerhat section (see details)
- Kolkata Metro Line-6 (Orange Line)’s 5.68 km Kavi Subhash – Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section (see details)
- Pune Metro Aqua Line’s 5.94 km Ruby Hall Clinic – Ramwadi section also known as Reach-3 (see details)
- Delhi – Meerut RRTS’ 17.1 km Duhai – Modinagar North section (see details)
In addition, the foundation stone for Pune Metro’s Phase 1 Extension or Phase 1A project was laid to extend Purple Line from Pimpri Chinchwad (PCMC) to Nigdi.

With this development, I’ve now updated the quick snapshot page of all systems over here. Some interesting tid-bits:
- Agra Metro is the only new system in the list and has now become India’s 17th metro system to go live
- Kolkata Metro’s Line-6 (Orange Line) has now become Kolkata’s fourth metro line to become operational
- Kolkata Metro continues to have 2 lines disjointed from the network: Line-3 (Joka – Majerhat) and the easter section of Line-2 (Sealdah – Sector V)
- Kolkata Metro Line-2’s twin tunnels, built in 2017 by Afcons – Transtonnelstroy JV, are now operational 15 meters under Hooghly River. This isn’t India’s first “underwater” metro as claimed though. Chennai Metro’s operational Blue Line has tunnels under Cooum River co-incidentally also built by Afcons – Transtonnelstroy JV in 2015
- Kochi Metro now has zero kilometers under construction for the first time since 2013. That should change when construction on Phase 2, which received 3 bids in December 2023, starts later this year
- Pune Metro’s 14.665 km Aqua Line is now completely operational between Vanaz – Garware College – Ruby Hall Clinic – Ramwadi after a 3 stage opening over the past 2 years (see history). The only section pending to open now in Phase 1 is the Purple Line’s 3.3 km underground route from Civil Court Station to Swargate Station where trial runs started in February 2024

How about we have elections every year?

Hi there, take this rationale somewhere else. Comments like these don’t belong here.
Hello TMRG,
I like how you moderate comments.
I hope this site continues to remain a walled garden of rationality and transparency undisturbed by politicisation of developments and ad hoc accusations. It is more important than ever to think and inform citizens on issues by providing substance and details in an ever increasingly polarising world.
I sincerely thank you for the service you render.

Ramesh
Cheers Ramesh 🙂
Dharamtar Creek between Revas – Karanja in Raigad, Maharashtra Project HCC Ltd is L1
Hi, Afcons is L1. Posted here: https://themetrorailguy.com/2024/03/06/afcons-wins-dharamtar-creek-bridges-contract-near-mumbai/
I hope CMRS did’nt “fast track” its procedure regarding safety protocols just to enable the happening of this “grand inauguration” just before the oncoming restrictions to be imposed due to MCC.
That’s exactly what happened
Have the commercial operations of all these metro lines commenced or is this a soft launch pending CMRS report compliance?
All are operational now as far as I am aware
To all those saying east west metro is not the first Underwater metro of India :-
Technically, Kolkata metro’s existing blue line is India’s First UNDERWATER metro.
Shyambazar – Belgachhia section is built under circular canal. This is also the oldest metro line of the country.
But, if you consider metro under a major river, then east west line of Kolkata metro is the first in country.
Thank you.
