Aarvee Awarded Tumkur Metro Line’s Feasibility Contract by BMRCL

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL)’s updated website indicates Aarvee Associates Architects Engineers & Consultants Pvt. Ltd. on June 29 was awarded a Rs. 1.25 crore contract to prepare a Feasibility Study Report for extending Bangalore Metro from Madavara (BIEC) to Tumkur (Tumakuru).

This roughly 52.41 km metro line to Tumkur is planned to be built as an elevated extension of the 33.53 km Green Line (Anjanapura – Madavara) on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. Its alignment will run along Tumkur Road (National Highway NH-4).

Aarvee Associates will examine and recommend the line’s optimal mode (MRTS, RRTS, MetroNeo), type (elevated, underground), alignment, estimated ridership, location of stations & depot and associated construction costs.

BMRCL had invited bids for this consultancy contract in March 2024 with an unknown estimate and 6 month completion deadline. Technical bids were opened in April to reveal 8 bidders which included the likes of SYSTRA and RITES.

I don’t have a full list of bidders and their bid values for this package. If someone does, then leave a comment below or shoot me a message via the Contact page. I’d like to add it in here for record keeping.

Final Contract Value: Rs. 1,25,54,343

Tender: BMRCL/Metro Corridor/Feasibility Study/2024/105

BMRCL’s scope: Preparation of Feasibility Study Report for extension of Bangalore Metro Rail Corridor from Madavara (BIEC) to Tumakuru for a length of 52.41 Km (approx.) on PublicPrivate Partnership (PPP) model

19 stations on this line are planned to be built at Tumakuru Bus Stand, Tumakuru University, Tumakuru, Kyathasandra, Pandithanahalli, Hirehalli, Chikkahalli, Nallayanpalya, Dabaspete, Sompura Industrial Area, Billanakote, Kuluvanahalli, T. Begur, Budhihal, Nelamangala NH, Nelamangala, Dasanpura and Makali.

With this contract awarded, we can expect the feasibility report to be prepared and finalized in Q1 2025. I hope Aarvee recommends constructing a semi high-speed RRTS line. The length and urbanscape this line is planned through makes it ripe for an RRTS line with stations 4-5 kms apart – similar to the ones under construction and planned in Delhi NCR (see project details)

We’re still in early days of the project. If and when the feasibility report is approved, the next step would be to create a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and go through the regular motions of approvals with funding being secured parallelly.

Whether it’s a MRTS (metro) or RRTS line, at this time I don’t see construction work starting before 2032. Lines within Phase 3 and Phase 3A projects have been locked with approvals currently pending from the Central Government’s Cabinet for Phase 3 and State Government’s Cabinet for Phase 3A.

There’s a long way to go as BMRCL’s priority for the next 6 years would be to close out & operationalize Phase 2, Phase 2A & Phase 2B, and coordinate the start of Phase 3 & 3A’s construction and systems procurement.

Shouldn’t this be considered to be included in the suburban rail project? The distance makes sence for it and the cost would be lower as well

Suburban Rail’s C2 is designed with Tumkur in mind, but we need trains that can support higher speeds. A 52 km journey with metro like average speeds of around 35 kmph will make this a long tiring ride.

If they are planning to build an RRTS, they should atleast have a plan for the same RRTS train to integrate with the green line and head towards majestic as a local service similar to the lines of meerut metro cum RRTS. That would be the best thing to happen 🤞🏻

I believe the metro should be atleast extended till Nelamangala, keeping in mind the development and population in the longer term. And Suburban or rapid train mode from Nelamangala to Tumakuru would be ideal. A link need to be provided between metro and the other mode to access it easily. And shifting all the buses ( heading to 22 other districts of Karnataka) travelling towards Nelamangala to new bus terminal at Nelamangala. This will immediately decrease the huge vehicle density on NH4 and other highways connected to it. Government should plan for a longer term.

Yes, I think it makes sense to extend the Metro line only till Nelamangala instead of Tumkur. Also, Nelamangala’s infrastructure should be upgraded so that it can serve as a satellite town. Further, it makes sense to operate a new bus terminal in Nelamangala and stop the buses coming from Mangaluru/Hassan and North Karnataka (via NH4) right over there and reduce congestion in Bengaluru.

They should make a station in Tumkur Toll gate the place where industrial employees & college students of HMSIT local villagers are more to comute & there is spacious for station…..kyathsandra don’t have space for space properly….

    Dear sir madam
Instead of metro it should be considered as suburban rail facility and extended till tumkur.
It will help common people to access the services

What’s the necessity for preparing a feasibility study to extend Metro to Tumakuru. Any lay man can say it’s not a feasible means. First construction of Metro line is highly expensive (about 10 times more than that of Railway line). Moreover tickets will be priced higher compared to trains. There will not season tickets at concession rates as available in trains. We are not ready to pay exorbitant price when cheaper train tickets are available.
Instead of Metro suburban train can be extended to Tumakuru which will be much cheaper for implementation as well fare wise. Only for political gains such studies are being taken up.

There are soo many suburb areas are left over metro connectives. Most of the areas in Bangalorians are not proper access to metro. VIDYARANYAPURA and yalahanka,Jigani, Bannerghatta national park. They should concentrate on these area for metro connectivity rather then Tumkur. Which can be taken on later stage. BMRCL should concentrate on interal suburb which are far away from metro connectivity.

This line is economically unviable. On long routes/inter-city, there is no point in operating a Metro train that runs far slower than MEMU/DEMU. As such double track and electrification are already in place. It’s ideal to run frequent and fast trains between Tumkur and Yeshwanthpur. From Yeshwanthpur, one could hop on to Metro. There is no need to wait until 2032, nor spend a huge amount of money to build Metro line to Tumkur.
