Afcons Infra Awarded Viaduct Contract for Nagpur Metro’s EW Line

It’s official now. The Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation has finally awarded Afcons Infrastructure with a contract to build the elevated viaduct of the 10.387 km Lokmanya Nagar – Jhansi Rani Square ‘Reach 3’ section of the metro’s 18.557 km east-west line.

Afcons had emerged as the lowest bidder for this section’s viaduct package in April 2016, but their bid was challenged by the Tata-YEC JV who had been disqualified by the NMRCL on experience parameters. The JV then obtained a stay order from the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, but the Supreme Court set it aside (view entire judgement) in favor of Afcons and ruled that there are qualitative differences in constructing intercity and metro projects.

This is the 5th major civil contract to be awarded by the NMRCL – see entire list. As per their website, the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) was given to Afcons on October 28. The final value of the contract has not been disclosed.

The contract to construct 10 stations on this stretch was awarded to ITD Cementation in September 2016. It includes stations at Lokmanya Nagar (near the depot), Bansi Nagar, Vasudev Nagar, Rachna Ring Road Junction, Subhash Nagar, Ambazari Lake View (see site image & station design), LAD Chowk, Shankar Nagar, Institute of Engineers and Jhansi Rani Square.  The line will intersect with the under construction north-south line at Sitaburdi where the interchange station will be surrounded by mixed use developments (see final design here).
