Bangalore’s RV Road – Bommasandra Line Realigned at Jayanagar

Here’s something that I found mildly interesting.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. recently made a small realignment to their upcoming 18.80 km Rashtriya Vidyalaya Road – Bommasandra metro line of Phase 2 at its northern terminal in Jayanagar after running into opposition from local residents of the Lakshman Rao Park area. Residents were concerned that construction would involve (1) large scale acquisition as the line turned east towards Marenahalli road (2) cutting down 150 full-grown tress and (3) disrupting their water supply as the Cauvery I, II and III water pipelines are located beneath the Lakshman Rao Park.

As per a BMRCL official who interviewed with the Bangalore Mirror:

On the Jayanagar 8th Block side, the damage would be too much since more than 150 well-grown trees would come under the axe. Of course, even some properties had to be acquired. But since there was a Plan B that works better with a slight change of alignment, we froze this line. Yes, it is close to water lines, so we discussed carrying out the construction without endangering the utility lines with the BWSSB. The BWSSB chief has given the green signal. The issue is not just water lines but also private properties that will be demolished,

The Plan B mentioned above involves beginning the RV Road – Bommasandra line’s viaduct (shown in Yellow below) from the western side of the RV Road station and crossing over the existing Green line’s viaduct between RV Road & Banashkari stations on its way to the Ragigudda Temple station on Marenahalli road.

When built, this would be the first instance of 2 elevated metro lines crossing over each other in Bangalore. Elsewhere in India, Delhi has 5 locations where 2 elevated lines cross or will soon cross each other:

1) Pink line over Airport Express line at Dhaula Kuan – view images
2) Pink line over Blue line at Karkardooma – view satellite imagery
3) Blue line over Pink line at Rajouri Garden – view images
4) Green line over Pink line at Punjabi Bagh – view images
5) Pink line over Blue line at Mayur Vihar – view satellite imagery

Just listed out wherever viaducts cross each other. Interchanges would include Chennai’s Alandur interchange like you correctly pointed out, Hyderabad’s 3 interchanges (Ameerpet, MGBS, Parade Grounds), Ahmedabad’s Old High Court interchange and Nagpur’s Sitaburdi interchange.

In India there are only two lines that cross “each other”: Delhi’s Blue and Pink lines.

    See (2), (3) and (5). 🙂

Old post, but new question after tenders were opened for the R5 line, and the accompanying detailed alignment didn’t help (me) much.

In an update to the Bangalore Mirror article linked to in this post, (here: http://bangaloremirror.indiatimes.com/bangalore/others/Metro-phase-2-line-realigned-again/articleshow/53531674.cms), it was mentioned that the length of the station box will now be 85m as against the previously planned 135 meters. (to save a few more trees)

Will this mean that we won’t have enough space for six coaches?

Hi, the platform length will remain consistent at 135m for accommodating 6 coach trains. Structurally the platforms on either end will be built on the pillars north & south of the line like LMRCL has done at Lucknow Metro’s upcoming Singar Nagar station – see a pic here. I’ve quickly made a special diagram for you – see it here. Hope this helps 🙂

    Hi,
Wanted to know weather HCC-URC JV have handled this kind on crossover viaducts in other cities if they have built such cross overs?

Why not make the RV-Road to Bommasandra line a branch of green-line instead of it being a new line with interchange ? trains from Bommasandra can go all the way to central bangalore then to BIEC.

If at all required in future – when there are enough trainsets- some trains (possibly alternate trains) can terminate at RV road and go back to Bommasandra. Similarly some trains on branch from Anjanapura can as well terminate at RV road and go back to anjanapura.
if there is a connectivity between bommasandra side and anjanapura side the alternate trains can go from bommasandra to anjanapura and back as well.

Just want to understand what prevents this design?
basically a yellow line becomes an inverted y and a direct link between two prongs of y.

That means the platform alignment of RV road from Left 2 Right will b *2-1-3-4*
