Signalling Tests Completed on Delhi Metro’s Bot. Garden-Kalkaji Stretch

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that its engineers along with Nippon Signal’s engineers have completed testing the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system on the 12.64 km Botanical Garden – Kalkaji Mandir section of Delhi Metro’s new 38.23 km Magenta Line in the 162.5 km Phase 3 project.

The Magenta Line (Line-8) is equipped with Nippon Signal’s SPARCS (Simple-structure and high Performance ATC by Radio Communication system) signalling solution which enables Delhi’s new Hyundai Rotem trains to be operated on both the unattended “driverless” and automatic train operating (UTO and ATO) modes. The contract for that was awarded by the DMRC in September 2013 with a value of Rs. 246 crore.

The DMRC has also indicated that they’ve received fire safety clearance, license for working lifts, preliminary Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) reports for signalling and platform screen doors (PSDs) and clearances from the Department of Telecommunications. With those clearances received, they’re now in the process of submitting their paperwork to the Indian Railways’ Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety to visit and examine the line one last time –

The papers for scrutiny and detailed examination by CMRS are under submission to his office and after these are cross checked, examined and scrutinised in depth by the office of CMRS, further action is expected. In addition, since the application involves voluminous data of civil, electrical, signalling and track, DMRC may also have to supply any additional information further sought by the office of CMRS. After this entire process, it is expected that a suitable date for inspection of the section will be indicated.

Trial runs (testing) on the Magenta Line commenced in June 2016 between the Kalindi Kunj Depot and Okhla Vihar Station, and were extended westward to Kalkaji Mandir shortly after in August. The DMRC was originally targeting to open this section up in December 2016, but has since then moved its publicly facing deadline every other month due to reasons ranging from contractors abandoning the project to synchronization issues between the signalling system and platform screen doors. They now plan to launch the Botanical Garden – Kalkaji section as soon as the CMRS’ approval is received and the rest of the line (possibly in 2 segments) by March 2018, but it remains to be seen if that’ll be accomplished as proper signalling tests on the Kalkaji Mandir – IGI section are yet to begin.

This first section of the line includes 9 stations at Kalkaji Mandir, Okhla NSIC, Sukhdev Vihar, Jamia Milia Islamia, Okhla Vihar, Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, Kalindi Kunj, Okhla Bird Sanctuary and Botanical Garden. While Kalkaji Mandir is underground, all other stations are elevated –

Yea, even the PSDs seem to have received a good amount of paint splatter. Hopefully that’s all taken care of by the time they launch ops.

“under submission to his office” means papers are not still sumbitted to CMRS.metro is just make fool out of everybody, but extending deadlins.now a days ,they never give the correct picture.i only see inspection happening in Nov & opening in mid -nov.it could take upto a week for inspection to be done ,since this is a sopisticated & complex lines .even other lines like ITO-kashmeri gate took 3 days.

Will ticket prices will decrease once this segment opens? As this will reduce km distance between various stations.

Yup! Kalkaji to Botanical via the existing route (Violet – Blue) is Rs. 50 right now. If I’m not mistaken, it’ll drop down to Rs. 30 when this line opens up.

How much time does it usually take between CMRS inspection and actual commissioning of operations??
    Any fair idea?

    • TMRG says:

Inspections usually take 2-5 days (depends on the length of line) and the approval can take another 3-7 days to be received. After that, the opening date depends on the completion of CMRS’ required corrections (if any), interior finishing works and the availability of ministers.

So from here on, the line could open anytime within the next 45 days.

What is the Multi storied structure adjoining the Okhla NSIC station that is still being constructed. Hope that does not delay the operations even further

Delay of last 6 months is mainly due to imcomplete stations and external work. It seems DMRC has no control over contractors.
