SMEC Unveils Design for Bangalore Metro Blue Line’s Stations

Consulting firm SMEC has unveiled architectural concepts and designs for 18 stations on Bangalore Metro’s new 57 km Blue Line in the upcoming Phase 2A and Phase 2B project which will link Central Silk Board – KR Puram – Airport.

SMEC indicates the designs reflect Bangalore’s “Garden City” ethos while maximizing property development area for commercial opportunities.

Architectural concepts and designs, which are being delivered in BIM, maximise property development area and optimise space in the stations for commercial opportunities. The station buildings will reflect Bangalore’s “Garden City” ethos while ensuring safety, sustainability, and high performance.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) had awarded SMEC with this line’s Rs. 8.30 crore Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract in February 2020 for a roughly 26 km section between Central Silk Board and HBR Layout.

This includes all 13 stations of Phase 2A’s ORR Line between Central Silk Board and KR Puram, and 5 stations of Phase 2B’s Airport Line between Kasturinagara and HBR Layout.

Here’s SMEC’s description of their role:

Our specialists are delivering complicated and varied design concepts, including concept to construction drawings on architecture, structure, electrical elements, plumbing and drainage, fire detection, fire-fighting services and traffic diversion plans. Our role also includes review of other elements such as alignments, temporary works and as-built drawings.

The ongoing Phase 2 project’s station designs and color schemes have so far been dull and uninspiring, so it’s exciting to see this in the works even if it’s just a concept. As always, I’m expecting these designs to further evolve over time. Hopefully it’ll be for the better and the execution matches what’s proposed.

In case you missed it – Afcons & Shankaranarayana were awarded Phase 2A’s construction contracts last week and basic ground work is expected to start in Q3. The civil structure of Agara Lake Station, pictured above, will be built by Afcons.

    Is the above design for Agrahara Lake Station only or is it indicative of station design for all the other 17 stations as well? If it’s for Agrahara lake station only then would SMEC come up with station design for the rest of the stations as well?

      Actually it is Agrahara Lake only. That has been shortened 2 Agara Lake. Like how the word “Bendakaalooru” had been shortened 2 “Bengaluru” and then “Bangalore”, same way here.

        That is the etymology of the word Agara. Not what is used today. The word Agrahara is still used as in ‘Konena Agrahara’. So, sticking to ‘Agara’, as it is in all maps, is better to avoid confusion.

        I’ve heard of both being used, but have corrected it to “Agara” as that’s what BMRCL has used in their tender documents as well.

      Do you know if renderings for other stations are publicly available? The SMEC website only seems to have renderings for Agara Lake Stn.

          Ah okay. Always a good idea! Hope you’re staying safe and well.

          Would love to see designs/street plans for Doddanekundi Station, once available. We’re trying to improve cycling and walking facilities connecting to transit stops in the area and those could be useful.

            Next thing is the White Topped Flyover at Hebbal. Bbmp says that 100 Crores will be spoilt if BMRCL constructs Metro over the bridge. It had spent 100 Crores 2 White Top the flyover. But let the 100 Crores go 2 gutter. BBMP knew very well that only Centre’s and Tree Axing Approvals were remaining. Still it Atrociously continued the White Topping.

            I am seriously telling. 5000 Trees are on the way. 1026 Trees BW KR Puram and Airport and 3974 Trees BW Silk Board and KR Puram. The PIL filed by Activists against Cutting Trees. HC should approve the removal of these trees. Even someone should grant 100 Crores 2 BBMP for the Compensation of White Topped Bridge.

      Not a single one of these Armchair Environmentalists ever travel through Public Transportation. These sicko’s derailed Mumbai Metro altogether which was going on at brisk pace and also Bengaluru’s Ph-2 Metro construction.
      I’m not sure why the dumb Judges haven’t questioned these Armchair Enviro’s about the same!! Also wonder why our Executive isn’t planning properly to keep these Enviro’s at Bay either!!
      Overall, it’s the Public who’s a Loser!!

    There have been many news articles stating that the metro phase 2A stations will not have a separate concourse level and platform level. But this design is clearly showing two separate levels.

    Any clarifications on this?

    Most look like copy paste ideas. Create one idea and copy it to all other stations. Each station is no looking unique..

      But why tf should it look unique?
      If executed properly, by 2030 NAMMA metro is expected to have more then 150 stations!
      Do you expect all to be unique?
      Infact uniform designed stations in each line will be better, since it will also reduce designing & implementation costs.

      Look closely at the Peenya 2 Nagasandra and National College 2 RV Road stretches. The stations have been built in the same design in each stretch. Peenya Station looks similar 2 Peenya Industry, Jalahalli, Dasarahalli and Nagasandra. National College looks similar 2 Lalbagh, South End Circle, Jayanagar and RV Road.

    Hope somebody can ensure existing roads at the Metro alignment experience least disruption. Right now there is no practice of construction activity or materials staying within the fence. Construction material are stacked on the road with live traffic having to swerve to avoid them. “Housekeeping” is an alien concept in India.

    I don’t know why all these architects and consultants when they show concept pictures of their proposals they show westerners(white skinned) people walking around? Why not truly a Desi one? This is true for so many advertisements.
