6 Bidders for Chennai Metro Madhavaram Depot’s Construction
Besides opening technical bids for Line-5’s northern section, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) today also opened bids for Madhavaram Depot’s construction contract to reveal 6 firms have submitted bids.
Madhavaram Depot train maintenance depot (or carshed) of the Phase 2 project will serve Chennai Metro’s new 45.813 km Line-3 (Madhavaram – SIPCOT 2) and Line-5 (Madhavaram – Sholinganallur).
Coming up in north Chennai, this depot will be developed on a 68.6 acre government-owned land parcel and be larger than Phase 1’s 65.4 acre Koyambedu Depot built for handling Phase 1’s green & blue line trains.
The depot will be used to stable & maintain a majority of 112 3-coach trains belonging to both lines. CMRL had revealed in June 2020 that 70 trains (210 coaches) will be procured while 42 trains (126 coaches) will be leased. Design details such as the number of stabling, workshop, inspection lines wasn’t mentioned in the basic tender notice and remains unknown at this time.
CMRL invited bids for this package in February with a 1030 days (2.8 years) deadline and an undisclosed estimate.
Lead Bidders (some might be in a JV):
- BGR Energy Systems
- Hindustan Construction Co. (HCC)
- ISGEC Heavy Engineering
- JMC Projects (India)
- Power Mech Projects
- URC Construction (URCC)
Tender No: PHASE-II/CORR-5/CP16-MMC-DPT/2021
Brief Scope: Construction of metro train depot with administration & workshop buildings at Madhavaram Milk Colony include civil, MEP, roofing, signage, architectural finishes, STP, external drainage, internal roads, boundary wall and all associated works in Corridor-5 of CMRL Phase-II Project
The bids have now been sent for technical bid evaluation which can take a couple months to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor for its construction.
Operations on Line-3 and Line-5 will also be supported via a new stabling yard at SIPCOT which is a part of Package C3-ECV-01 (Sholinganallur – SIPCOT 2).
Bids for Line-4’s Poonamallee Depot are planned to be opened tomorrow, so stay tuned for a list of its bidders! A list of all Phase 2 civil packages and their status can be viewed here.

Only if these many bidders showed interest for other elevated sections as well…
Depot vs elevated – both are different beasts in terms of complexity, skills required etc. 🙂
Clearly South Madras left out.. What is the current status of Airport – Kilambakkam Metro Phase 1 Extension?!!
Still dpr is being prepared. But in final stage. So we’ll expect floating of contracts next year spring!
DPR has been submitted to CMRL by the consultants. After CMRL reviews the DPR , it will be submitted to state government for approval.
And once its done pre construction activity can start
where is the budget for the extension. Center has just approved phase 2 for now. CM wants kilambakkam and velachery to tambaram lite. But no work unless budget is approved.
I would not say south madras is left out as it has the subway on the same path.
They will soon allocate the fund bro
