L&T Wins Mumbai – Ahmedabad HSR’s Package C5 in Vadodara

Larsen & Toubro today emerged as the lowest bidder to construct the 8.198 km Package C-5 of the 508.17 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train project) after the National National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL) opened financial bids.

Package C5 connects chainage KM 393.700 and KM 401.898 of the main-line within Vadodara city and is the second shortest of 5 packages within Gujarat state. In mid-2022, it will become Gujarat’s fifth and final section to head into the construction stage.

NHSRCL had invited bids for its construction in June 2021 with a completion period / deadline of 1490 days (4 years) and unknown estimate. Technical bids were opened in October to reveal 3 bidders.

This package’s tendering process took a long time to start due to a redesign for optimizing the quantum of construction required. Read all about that and see a video here.

NHSRCL’s estimate is unknown to me, so it’s impossible to gauge how L&T’s bid is placed and the chances of a LOA getting issued. If awarded, this will be L&T’s third and smallest win, and they’ll be responsible for constructing 333.87 km of the main-line (C4 + C5 + C6) all the way from the Maharashtra – Gujarat border to Ahmedabad city’s south-side.

With this development, here’s a status of each civil package of the bullet train project. This table is best viewed on a desktop device.

If the last package, have a deadline of 4 years and the other packages are already in construction phase.

Do you think the entire Gujarat stretch can open by 2026 ?

What’s the main reason for this expensive and time-consuming 20 km tunnel ?
Can’t it be replaced by a over the ground line ?
Are the environmental concerns serious or just another cause for the sponsered ngos ?

BKC – creek section is heavily built-up. Creek has mangroves on either side, 1-2 km deep. Creek to Shilphata is again built-up.

So it’s easier to build a tunnel and get over with it.

Not sure why it’s on hold for such a long time. They should either award it or just scrap it. The delay is unnecessary.
