RITES Awarded Bangalore Metro Phase 2A & 2B’s PMC Contract

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL)’s updated website indicates RITES Ltd. was on Monday awarded a Rs 20.58 crore Project Management Consultant contract for Bangalore Metro’s 56 km Line-5 (Blue Line).

This line of Phase 2A (ORR Line) and Phase 2B (Airport Line) will connect Silkboard – KR Puram – Bengaluru International Airport through 30 stations on the Outer Ring Road and NH-44.

They invited tenders for Phase 2A/2B’s PMC contract in September 2020 with an expected duration of 48 months. Technical bids were opened in June 2021 to reveal 2 bidders – RITES and Aarvee Associates.

RITES’s selection was made on the QCBS (Quality and Cost Based Selection) basis. If someone has final scores (technical + financial) for each bidder, then leave a comment below or shoot me a message via the Contact page. I’d like to add it in here for record keeping.

Though metro on this route was essential, I don’t get the point of having it all the way to airport as a regular metro , which travels at 34 km/hr avg speed. It won’t be used , specially post 2028/29 ( project complition realistically) . It will take close to 2 hrs from silk board . 2.5 hrs from ecity. India needs to plan ahead ,not this. A express metro line alongside if not not fisable you are pretty much closing that option for next 15 yrs minimum ( 8 yrs complition of current one and if a express line is build, immediately, additional 7 yrs atleast) .

Not going to slove any problem for commute to airport but great for ORR .

The train in the ORR Airport section will travel almost 1.6x faster than other lines, reason being it is designed for the purpose and due to less number of stations.

BMRCL is adopting the concept of U-girders for the First Time, Specially and Specifically for this line, which will make it complete in just 2 years or so. Bcoz Land Acquisition is done almost. 97-98% Land has been acquired for the Airport Section alone. ORR is Full 100% Hence construction will finish in no time

I believe BMRCL clarified this. There will be a very limited number of stops between Krishnarajapuram Interchange and KIAL Terminals, thus allowing the average speed of the train to increase.

Upon examining the stations list though, it still feels like there are too many.

Agree with you, but we are not left with many options here, high speed airport dedicated rail is not viable as seen in many countries and Delhi as well. Also by road it is bound to take ~3 hrs or more by the project completion. Until Yelahanka it will operate at normal metro speeds and then shall pick up speed due to limited stations for next 17kms. Earlier the estimated deadline was 2025 and now as per our new CM it is 2027 and exact date ?

The airport metro train must be designed to carry traveller luggage. There should be adequate space to store the luggage otherwise the purpose will be lost. One or two compartments must be reserved to such passengers.

Then why did u say “Only Challaghatta Tender Notice is Pending” ?? BTW, have the U-Girders arrived for Blue line construction ??

Thought you were referring to just Phase 2. For Phase 2B, notices for Shettigere Depot and Byp Depot’s remodeling are pending.

U-girders will be cast locally. SNC and Afcons are currently setting up their casting yards.

We also request BMRCL to plan next another metro track to hoskote…..it is too hard for the residents of these route localities to travel by for jobs and clgs… we request BMRCL to plan and fulfil this requirement…thank you..

Well BMRCL’s purpose is to resolve the traffic issue in the city, so I don’t think they will extend it upto hoskote as it is considered a suburb. However we can request K-ride to construct a branch line from Whitefield to Hoskote and start suburban service bcz K-ride’s purpose is to connect Bengaluru to its suburbs(Bidadi, Devanahalli, Nelamangala Town, Hoskote etc).

      • Jishnukrishna Venkat says:

A Metro-LITE can be used for such suburban regions–OR–Nelamangala, Bidadi and Devanahalli have Indian Railway stations. Hence Suburban Trains from KSR Bangalore City to Nelamangala, Bidadi and Devanahalli can be introduced.

Ok. But life at Bengaluru is getting costlier. What if metro has come or not . But it is one mode of transportation .

Hey TMRG, AFAIK last I checked, the construction for P2A can only be seen in areas with no trees, since the court case for tree felling is still pending I believe. Unfortunately there are at least 2-3 sections of the ORR that have lots of trees. Has the matter been resolved now?

And with that, does the (extremely optimistic) 2024/25 deadline seem feasible now, given the quick progress and no other land hurdles?

Sorry for the barrage of questions

The court haf dismissed the PIL in September and BMRCL has got nod to axe 577 trees and transplant 212 of them from Silk Board to Kadubeesanahalli/Kodibaasanahalli

Jishnu answered your tree related question. With construction practicalities, I’m looking at a 2026-27 opening at this time. Hoping for a sooner opening.

        1) BMRCL has well before acquired Land.
        2) U-girders are used rather than Box ones
        3) Box ones itself took 4-5 Years, that too property acquisition was done during construction, for the Green Line. With the First 2 Conditions satisfied, ORR KIA will be finished in Half Time or Less, as we r nearing Pre-pandemic Era

Challaghatta Depot is urgent. Seems like BMRCL is trying to Postpone it. But ORR metro will soon get ready and Bayappanahalli Depot will become a part of the ORR KIA Line. The depot can also not be Hybridized for serving both DTG based and CBTC based trains. Hence Challaghatta Depot is much required
