NCC Launches Pune Metro Reach 1 Viaduct’s Final Segment
NCC Ltd. on October 31 celebrated launching the final box segment for 10.795 km Reach-1 (PCMC – Range Hills) section of Pune Metro’s 16.589 km Purple Line which will connect PCMC – Swargate through 14 stations.
Construction for Reach 1’s viaduct of 31.254 km Pune Metro Phase 1 project was awarded to NCC in February 2017 with a contract value of Rs. 499.01 crore. Its 6 km Priority Section between PCMC – Phugewadi was inaugurated in March 2022, with portions of the rest (Phugewadi – Range Hills) held up due to severe land acquisition issues.
NCC utilized a casting yard in Tathawade to support this section’s construction from where I estimate approximately 3900 segments were cast, with the final one a few days prior on October 19, 2022.
Each segment typically has a length of 3m, top width of 8.5m, bottom width of 3.5m, and weighs approximately 37 MT. Like the segments cast in Nagpur, segments in Pune have also been integrated and cast along with a parapet wall (unique in Indian metros) to cut down construction time, transportation time and the purchase cost of separate casting molds.
The first segment was launched on Old Mumbai Road in March 2018 using the underslung construction method with a mobile crane. Co-incidentally the final segment too was launched using a mobile crane near Khadki.
9 stations on Reach-1 by HCC – Al Fara’a JV are located at PCMC, Sant Tukaram Nagar, Bhosari (Nashik Phata), Kasarwadi, Phugewadi, Dapodi, Bopodi, Khadki and Range Hills.
Cool video by MahaMetro:
Back in July 2022, NCC launched its final segment for the Aqua Line’s 7.15 km Reach 2 (Vanaz – Civil Court) in western Pune.
With this development, 7.578 km Reach 3 (Civil Court – Ramwadi) in eastern Pune is the only section of Phase 1 where viaduct work is pending by J Kumar Infraprojects. Watch a cool drone-view status video here by MahaMetro.
