L&T Opens Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train’s Track Slab Facility

India’s National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) on Saturday announced the opening of Larsen & Toubro’s specialized High-Speed Rail Track Slab Manufacturing Facility (TSMF) in Anand, Gujarat.

This facility covering an area of over 1 lakh sq meters will produce 45,000 precast track J-Slabs for Package T3 of the 508.17 km Mumbai – Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project.

Slabs cast at this facility will be installed on a 116.175 km section of the line connecting Vadodara city and Sabarmati Depot in Gujarat which is under construction through civil packages C5, C6, C7 and C8.

Larsen & Toubro was awarded a Rs. 3141.99 crore contract for track work Package T-3 in May 2022. They constructed this facility within 8 months from the start of ground work.

Per NHSRCL’s press release, approximately 200 track slabs are required per track kilometre. So far, 60 high-precision moulds have been procured and installed in the facility which can produce 60 track slabs per day and store up to 9000 track slabs.

Here’s a cool infographic shared by NHSRCL in the past showing different components of the Japanese J-Slab track system.

Construction of the first reinforced concrete track-bed on the viaduct had started in Surat back in August 2023 – see a cool video here.

Before the start of production, Japanese experts (mobilized through T&C agency Japan Railway Technical Service (JARTS)) organized a training & certification course to impart training on tracklaying best practices.

IRCON International is constructing another track slab manufacturing facility at Kim Village, Surat district for track-work Package T2. Slabs from there will be installed on a 237.10 km section connecting Vadodara and Zaroli village on the Gujarat – Maharashtra border.

In the future a third facility will be built in Maharashtra via Package T1 to supply slabs to civil packages C1, C2 & C3 (Zaroli – Bandra Kurla Complex). A tender notice is still pending for that work.

Congratulations to L&T for this achievement . I want to know about the type of reinforcement used in the Concrete Track shown in the photo above. If Steel TMT Bars have been used, there could be a better solution. Steel TMT Bars tend to rust within few years.
