Delhi Metro Silver Line’s 1st Pier Cap Launched by YFC on DC-04

YFC Projects in November-end launched their first pier cap for the 23.62 km Delhi Metro Silver Line (Line-10) project’s viaduct which will connect Aerocity – Tughlakabad via 16 stations.

This feat on 65.1 km Delhi Metro Phase 4 project’s 4.28 km Package DC-04 (Saket G Block – Sangam Vihar) was recorded at the ramp area located in Saket’s City Forest. The ramp here will connect with 6.51 km underground Package DC-09 (Kishangarh – Neb Sarai) which is under construction by Larsen & Toubro.

YFC’s team used a 62 MT pier cap cast at their yard located in Pushp Vihar where casting works for 27.90m U-girders began in August 2020. I estimate they will eventually cast and launch a total of 120 pier caps for DC-04’s viaduct.

Package DC-04 is the only elevated package of the Silver Line (rest 3: DC-07, DC-08 & DC-09 are underground) and includes a roughly 2.4 km double-decker section for vehicles (1st level) and metro (2nd level) on Mehrauli Badarpur Road between Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar metro stations.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had awarded its Rs. 726.08 crore contract to YFC in December 2019 with a construction deadline of 36 months.

YFC’s scope of works also includes building an underpass at Saket G-Block, another 2 lane underpass from Mehrauli-Badarpur Road to Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, emergency siding lines and four elevated stations at Sangam Vihar, Khanpur, Ambedkar Nagar and Saket G Block.

Chasing a deadline of 36 months, the first pier cap was placed 48 months after the award of contract so this package on paper is running terribly behind schedule.

I suspect timelines have internally been negotiated with DMRC due to the disruption from Covid-19 and bidding delays booked between 2019-2021 in awarding contracts for the rest of the line’s construction as the start of commercial operations on DC-04 are dependent on completion of tunneling works on Afcons Infrastructure’s Package DC-07 which will connect up to Sarita Vihar Depot.
