Mumbai Metro Line-6: Ahluwalia & Sam Bid for Kanjurmarg Depot’s Work

Ahluwalia Contracts (India) and Sam India Builtwell have submitted bids for the civil construction contract (CA-209) of Mumbai Metro Line-6‘s Kanjurmarg Depot after Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) opened technical bids on Tuesday.

Kanjurmarg Depot will support operations on Mumbai’s 15.18 km elevated Pink Line which will connect Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) – Vikhroli via 13 elevated stations. It will be connected to the main-line via 4.771 km Package BC-01R1 which is under construction by J Kumar Infraprojects.

To be built along the Eastern Expressway Highway (EEH), the depot will consist of 18 stabling lines, 3 inspection bays, 4 workshop bays, an 811m long test track, operations control centre (OCC), administrative buildings, and staff quarters.

MMRDA had invited bids for its construction under Package CA-209 with a Rs. 508.57 crore estimate and 30 month construction deadline.

The bids have now been sent for technical evaluation which can take a couple months to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor.

Ahluwalia is currently building Mumbai Metro Line-2B’s Mandale Depot, while Sam India is building Line-3’s Aarey Depot.

MMRDA also plans to appoint a General Consultant (GC) to overlook the depot’s construction via Package CA-208. It’s a strange contract as a dedicated GC for depot works is unheard of, but anyhow that tender currently has a bid submission deadline of January 5, 2024.

Back in January 2021, DMRC had awarded Kanjumarg Depot’s track contract (Package CT-38) to Jindal Steel and Power Ltd. (JSPL) for supplying 1500 MT of Class “A” 880 Grade Rails to DMRC’s local storage yard.

A retender notice is still pending for the line’s 108 coach (18 train-set) rolling stock contract which was abruptly cancelled in October 2023, so we’re easily 2 years away from seeing trial runs begin.
