Sam India Wins Mumbai Metro Line-6 Kanjurmarg Depot’s Contract CA-209

March 12, 2024 Update: MMRDA has issued LOA to Sam India with a contract value of Rs. 547.45 crore.

February 5, 2024 Original Post: Sam India Builtwell was today declared as the lowest bidder for the construction of Mumbai Metro Line-6‘s Kanjurmarg Depot by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Kanjurmarg Depot, to be built under Package CA-209, will support operations on Mumbai’s 15.18 km elevated Pink Line which will connect Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) – Vikhroli via 13 elevated stations. It will be connected to the main-line via 4.771 km Package BC-01R1 which is under construction by J Kumar Infraprojects.

The depot’s site along the Eastern Expressway Highway (EEH) will consist of 18 stabling lines, 3 inspection bays, 4 workshop bays, an 811m long test track, operations control centre (OCC), administrative buildings, and staff quarters.

MMRDA had invited bids for its construction in October 2023 with a Rs. 508.57 crore estimate and 30 month construction deadline. Technical bids were opened in December 2023 to reveal just 2 bidders – Ahluwalia Contracts and Sam India Builtwell.

Sam India Builtwell is currently building Bhopal Metro’s Subhash Nagar Depot in a JV with KEC International, and more locally Mumbai Metro Line-3’s Aarey Depot.

Their bid of Rs. 547.45 crore was 7.64% higher than MMRDA’s estimate of Rs. 508.57 crore, so this will head to negotiations for the award of contract.

MMRDA is notorious for taking a long time to award contracts from the financial bid opening date (eg. Line-5’s depot to Rithwik took 6 months, Line-4’s depot to SEW – VSE JV took 5 months), so if that’s anything to go by then we should see Sam India getting issued a letter of award (LOA) around June – August 2024. I’m hoping that’s not the case as far too much time has been lost.

In case you missed it, MMRDA last week re-invited bids for Line-6’s systems contract (Package CA-232) which besides rolling stock (18 trains of 6 coaches) and CBTC signaling also includes installation of depot machinery & plant (M&P) for Kanjurmarg Depot.
