Mumbai Metro Line-12’s Groundbreaking Held to Start Construction

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister on Sunday formally inaugurated construction work on Mumbai Metro’s Line-12 (Orange Line) which will connect Kalyan – Dombivali – Amandoot (Taloja) via elevated 19 stations.

Mumbai’s Line-12 by Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will be built as a 22.17 km long southern extension of the partially under construction 23.53 km Line-5 (Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan) at an estimated cost of Rs 4,132 crore.

Line-12’s foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2019, and SYSTRA MVA Consulting – DB Engineering & Consulting JV was appointed as its General Consultant (GC) in December 2022.

Gawar Constructions was declared the lowest bidder for Line-12’s construction contract under Package CA-240 in February 2024 after placing a bid of Rs. 2037.20 crore in the second round of tendering.

The project has a tight 30 month construction deadline, and MMRDA anticipates the line to open up by 2027-end which seems extremely ambitious to me for a metro rail project in the Mumbai MMR region.

This was just a ceremonial groundbreaking event and the start of actual construction will take a few months due to pending pre-construction activities such as project staffing, barricading, utility shifting, geotechnical investigation etc.

When construction begins, 22.17 km long Package CA-240 for Line-12’s construction will be the longest EPC package in India’s metro construction history. The current longest is Bangalore Metro Phase 2B’s 15 km Package 3 which is under construction by NCC.
