Chennai Metro Phase 2: HCC-KEC Finishes Casting Works for Line-4’s ECV-02

Hindustan Construction Company – KEC International (HCC – KEC JV) on Thursday celebrated casting all of their precast elements for Package C4-ECV02 of Chennai Metro’s Line-4 which will connect Light House – Poonamallee Bypass.

This 7.945 km long package on the western-end of 26.1 km Line-4 connects Poonamallee Bypass – Porur via 9 elevated stations. It was the first civil package of the 116.1 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project where barricading for construction work started in Nazarethpettai in May 2021.

Per CMRL’s press release, a total of 2885 precast elements of 18 types of prestressed (pretensioned and post-tensioned) elements like U-girders, pier arms, portal beams and pier caps were cast by HCC – KEC JV at their yard located in Kolappancheri (view on Google Maps)

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) had awarded HCC – KEC JV with Package ECV-02’s Rs. 1007.95 crore contract in May 2021 with a 36 month construction deadline. Besides a 7.945 km viaduct for the main-line primarily consisting of U-girders, it includes a viaduct to Poonamallee Depot where 26 Alstom train-sets will be stabled & maintained.

The 9 stations within this package are located at Chennai Bypass Crossing, Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyapanthangal Bus Depot, Katupakkam, Kumanan Chavadi, Karayan Chavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee Bus Terminus and Poonamallee Bypass.

I recently updated my Chennai Metro Phase 2 map with the exact location of all elevated and underground stations across lines 3, 4 and 5 – check it out here.

Package ECV-02 is in the most advanced stage of construction and will be the first section of the Phase 2 project to open, which I reckon would happen in the second half of 2025.

All major system components of Line-4 have been awarded such as rolling stock (awarded to Alstom), electrification (awarded to Siemens) and telecom (awarded to Larsen & Toubro).

Alstom unveiled Line-4’s train design and began production in February 2024, so looking at historic train deliveries we should see the 1st train rolling out of their Sri City facility within the next 45 days or so. Stay tuned!
