Kanpur Metro’s Trial Runs Extended to Kanpur Central Station
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in mid-December extended and started trial runs (train testing) between Nayaganj and Kanpur Central stations on 23.785 km Kanpur Metro Line-1 (IIT Kanpur – Naubasta).
The 1250m long Nayaganj – Kanpur Central section was built with twin tunnels by Afcons Infrastructure’s TBMs Vidyarthi (S-639B) and TBM Azad (S-640B) as part of Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project’s Package KNPCC-06 (Nayaganj Station – Transport Nagar Ramp).
Prior to this, UPMRC in July 2024 had started trial runs on the line’s first 3.62 km underground section connecting MacRobertganj Ramp and Nayaganj Station. That section with 4 underground stations was built by Gulermak – Sam India Builtwell JV as part of Package KNPCC-05.
To facilitate the run, installation on the line’s 750 V DC Third Rail system was completed on December 12. From the operational Motijheel Station, UPMRC’s team manually operated one of their Alstom MOVIA train-sets at a low-speed on the up-line down MacRobertganj Ramp towards Kanpur Central Station.
As always, the sole objective of the first run was to check for Schedule of Dimensions (SOD) clearances and observe the train’s interaction with the civil structure to ensure there are no physical obstructions along the way.
Since mid-December various subsystems like the signaling system, also provided by Alstom, are being tested. The train’s response to being operated at different speeds & braking is being monitored along with the behavior of the track system installed by Larsen & Toubro (Package KNPAGT-3) and Third Rail system installed by Sterling & Wilson – GSC JV (Package KNPE-1 & 2).
Here are some snaps of Kanpur Central Station:
With this development, roughly 6.85 km of route is now under testing between the operational Motijheel Station and Kanpur Central Station, which provides connectivity to the Indian Railways.
When this new section becomes operational, Kanpur Metro’s Line-1 will become 15.22 km long connecting IIT Kanpur – Kanpur Central with 14 stations (9 elevated & 5 underground)
UPMRC hasn’t publicly announced a plan or deadline for operationalizing this section, but I hear they’re targeting a late-January / early-February opening. Whether that happens or not, we’ll soon find out!

MUMBAI METRO CONSTRUCTION:
NEVER ENDING STORY
On an average of 8-10 people die in local train accident every day in Mumbai.
Still projects are pending and not completed.
Metro trains are being built in Smaller towns where no people are riding. Don’t understand why.
small town? 😅 say who? Over smart guy from mafia town?
Now kanpuriyas has new station and train for spitting paan
The number of visitors will largely depend on the pricing policy, if initially it is not low as we see in Jaipur metro. Possiblilty to attract public for a large volume will be difficult. We see after 10 years no doubt whichever the pricing people will be in need to save time and use metro definelty. But as of now pricing will show effect to attract public means as other options are not only feasible and availabile but also habitually attracts as of now
The success will depend on the day of launch sooner will be better and metro pricing in comparison to shared auto will play important role.
