Delhi Metro’s Phase 5A Approved by India’s Central Government
India’s Central Government’s Cabinet in December-end officially approved the construction of Phase 5A or Phase V(A) project with an estimated cost of Rs. 12,014.91 crore. Phase 5A will be cumulatively 16 km long and includes 3 extensions of existing lines with 13 metro stations.
This exciting development aims to densify Delhi Metro’s network within Central Delhi (Lutyens’ Delhi) via the Magenta Line, and enhance the utility of Phase 4‘s under construction Golden Line by extending it to the Magenta Line on either end.
Here’s a list of all 3 new extensions planned in Phase 5A:
Line-8 – Magenta Line: R.K. Ashram – Indraprastha
- Estimated Cost: Rs. 9570.4 crore
- Length: 9.913 km
- Type: Underground
- Number of Stations: 9 (6 net new)
- Station Names: R.K Ashram Marg (new station box), Shivaji Stadium (new station box), Yuge Yugeen, Central Secretariat (new station box), Kartavya Bhawan, India Gate, War Memorial – High Court, Baroda House, Bharat Mandapam, and Indraprastha (new station box)
Line-10 – Golden Line: Aerocity – IGI Terminal 1
- Estimated Cost: Rs. 1419.6 crore
- Length: 2.263 km
- Type: Underground
- Number of Stations: 1 (0 net new)
- Station Names: IGI Terminal 1 (new station box)
Line-10 – Golden Line: Sarita Vihar Depot – Kalindi Kunj
- Estimated Cost: Rs. 1024.8 crore
- Length: 3.9 km
- Type: Elevated
- Number of Stations: 3 (2 net new)
- Station Names: Sarita Vihar Depot, Madanpur Khadar, and Kalindi Kunj (new station box)

The Magenta Line’s extension replaces Central Vista’s Automated People Mover (APM) system which was planned as a loop or ring. Ayesa India was awarded its Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract in November 2022, and that’s how far that project progressed.
After reviewing the official map, we’re looking at 0 net net new stations between Aerocity-Airport T1, 2 new stations between Tughlakabad – Kalindi Kunj, and 6 new stations between RK Ashram – Indraprastha.
Earlier this DMRC set into motion the construction of Magenta Line’s Yuge Yugeen Bharat Metro Station (Package EC-01) even before the government’s approval was received. That station’s construction is being planned to coincide with a new museum’s retrofit at the North and South Blocks of the Rashtrapati Bhawan complex. Sam India Builtwell was declared as its lowest bidder in August 2025 and I don’t believe a contract LOA has been issue yet.
It remains to be seen how Phase 5A will be funded and if Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will be involved again or not. In another 2-3 years we should start seeing glimpses of what Phase 5B will look like – there are plenty of gaps and neighborhoods yet to be covered throughout the National Capital Region which need attention.
Like other phases, I’ll update Delhi Metro Phase 5’s information page with more information as the project progresses along.
Meanwhile, India’s Cabinet had approved Delhi Metro’s Rithala – Kundli Line back in December 2024 – and tender notices for its construction are still pending. Hopefully Phase 5A doesn’t follow the same timeline.

Welcome back TMRG!
I was also brainstorming about some more small missed connections in delhi, like red line not going to Ghaziabad railway station (3-4 km)
Green line not going to Sarai kale khan, and so on. Hope, they get all of these done ASAP to make the network much more useful.
Also, they need to quickly start work on connecting the jewar airport otherwise that airport will have no utility, we are already very late on this project.
I think Magenta Line getting the Central loop line connectivity opens the door for Green Line’s extension to Sarai Kale Khan and beyond.
