Kanpur Metro: Ceigall Begins Casting U-Girders for Package KNPCC-12

Ceigall India and its subcontractor Dixcon Infra this Thursday began casting 28 meter long U-girders for Package KNPCC-12 of Kanpur Metro’s 8.38 km Line-2 which will connect Agriculture University and Barra-8.

Ceigall’s casting yard at Naubasta’s Hanspuram neighborhood (view on Google Maps) consists of 4 U-girder casting beds from where I estimate approximately 320 U-girders weighing 170MT will be cast to build the viaduct of Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project‘s 4.3 km Package KNPCC-12.

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had awarded Ceigall with KNPCC-12’s Rs. 427.11 crore construction contract in March 2024 with a 30 month deadline.

Package KNPCC-12 consists of 2 disjointed elevated sections on either side of underground Package KNPCC-11 (Agriculture Depot – Double Pullia Ramp) which was awarded for construction to KPIL – Gulermak JV in December 2023.

At 3.745 km, the southern section of KNPCC-12’s viaduct will connect Double Pullia Ramp and Barra-8 with 4 elevated stations at Vijay Nagar Chauraha, Shastri Chowk, Barra-7 Station and Barra-8. On the northern-end of the line, past Rawatpur Interchange Station, a small 557.8m viaduct will be built with 1 elevated station at Agriculture University next to Line-2’s Agriculture University Depot.

Ceigall had started casting pier caps for the line’s viaduct in June and will soon start casting double-T girders and I-girders at their yard which appears to me was earlier used for constructing Line-1’s Package KNPCC-07 (Transport Nagar Ramp – Naubasta Station).

KPIL (earlier JMC Projects) in May had completed casting all 348 U-girders, Double T-girders and I-girders for Package KNPCC-07, so from a cost and effort perspective it makes perfect sense to me to utilize an existing yard than to set up a new one.

Kanpur’s Line-2 is moving along nicely with lots of behind-the-scenes developments. Ceigall last week began piling work for the line’s viaduct and then a week prior to that Herrenknecht completed factory acceptance tests (FAT) on KPIL – Gulermak JV’s first tunnel boring machine (S-1408A) for 4.08 km underground Package KNPCC-11 (Agriculture Depot – Double Pullia Ramp).
